Softball With The Sweep Against Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Immaculata University softball picked up its fifth sweep against a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opponent this season with 8-4 and 5-2 wins against Gwynedd Mercy University Friday afternoon.
 
The Mighty Macs improve to 17-13 overall and 12-4 in the CSAC, while the Griffins fall to 13-15, 9-7 CSAC.
 
Meghan Kugler had a career day going 7-for-8, including one double and two triples, scored two runs and had five RBIs. Moriah Hunter was 4-for-6 for the afternoon, and Abigail Carter was 5-for-8 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
 
In the opener, Immaculata scored in each of the first three innings to take an early lead on Gwynedd Mercy. The Mighty Macs scored one unearned run in the first inning as Carter singled to lead the game off and came around to score on a Griffins fielding error three batters later.
 
The Mighty Macs added two more runs in the second as Victoria Post walked and Kugler delivered the first of her two triples to score Post. Following Hunter earning a walk, Carter singled to the left side to bring Kugler home for a 3-0 lead.
 
Gwynedd Mercy cut Immaculata's lead to 3-1 after the bottom of the second as the Griffins hit a home run.
 
Immaculata added to its lead with two runs in the top of the third as Annemarie Bartow and Emily Mesey each doubled, and Kugler singled later in the inning to score Mesey to make it 5-1.
 
The Griffins scored one more run in the bottom of the third trimming the Mighty Macs lead to 5-2, and the score would stay that until the fifth inning. Immaculata scored twice more in the fifth as Sydney Sturgill reached on a fielder's choice, and she scored on Post's single into left field. Post then came around to score on Kugler's double into left center.
 
Gwynedd Mercy cut the game to 7-4 scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Immaculata scored one more run in the seventh to seal the win. The Mighty Macs loaded the bases as Post reached on an error and Kugler and Hunter each singled, and Carter drove in Post with a single to the pitcher.
 
Kugler had four hits and three RBIs, while Carter picked up three hits and two RBIs in game one.
 
Jessica Bormann started and went all seven innings allowing four runs on seven hits. She struck out three along the way.
 
Immaculata scored the first run in game two as well getting on the board in the first inning as Carter singled, stole second, and eventually scored on Ashley Rey's grounder to first.
 
The Mighty Macs added one more run in the top of the fourth as Kugler and Sturgill each singled, and Kugler scored on Carter's single to right center.
 
The Griffins got one run back in the bottom half of the fourth to cut the Mighty Macs' lead to 2-1. However, Immaculata got the run right back in the top of the fifth as Bartow walked and scored on Kugler's triple into right center.
 
After Immaculata extended its advantage to 4-1 in the top of the sixth as Hunter singled and later scored on an error, Gwynedd Mercy scored in the bottom half of the inning to make it 4-2.
 
The Mighty Macs added their final run of the game in the seventh as Mesey triple, and Kugler followed with a single down the right field line for the 5-2 win.
 
Michaela Petito tossed the win in the circle for the Mighty Macs allowing just three hits and two runs, only one earned. She struck out three Griffins.
 
Immaculata hosts Cabrini tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. in CSAC action.
