IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata softball team (13-13) staged a huge comeback in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader against King's (15-11) on Monday afternoon at the IU Softball Field as they erased a 7-0 deficit in the fifth inning and won on a walk-off single by freshman Tori Post by a score of 10-9 before losing 7-1 in the second game to split the doubleheader.
Â
In the opener, the Macs were staked on offense by senior
Meghan Kugler with three hits, including the 100
th of her career, and junior shortstop
Annemarie Bartow hit a clutch three-run home run to bring IU back into the game.
Â
King's raced out to a 4-0 lead through three innings against sophomore Jess Bormann, and they added three more in the fourth and fifth innings to make it 7-0 against freshman
Nicole Kowalski.
Â
The Macs entered the bottom of the fifth without a hit to that point, but they broke out with a crucial six-run inning to get back into the game. Kugler scored on a passed ball and a pair of sacrifice flies made it 7-3. Then with two outs and two on, Bartow skied one deep to right field to pull the Macs within one.
Â
Kowalski surrendered another in the sixth, but the Macs tied it again through six innings with a two run double to left field by freshman Abby Carter (2-for-4, 2 RBI).
Â
Freshman
Michaela Petito came on in the seventh for relief and surrendered a run to put the Macs down a run heading to their final at bat and in need of a rally. Freshman
Emily Mesey (1-for-4, R) singled with two outs and Petito reached on an error to put two on with two outs. That's when Kugler delivered the 100
th hit of her career with a single to right field to tie the game, and Post ended it with a line drive single to right-center field for the walk-off victory.
Â
In the second game, the Macs fell behind 1-0 in the first, but freshman
Ashley Rey lined a home run to centerfield to tie the game 1-1. From there, King's slowly built their lead with two in the third and four in the fourth to make it 7-1 through four innings against Petito.
Â
Bormann tossed three shutout innings to close out the game, but the IU offense was unable to generate anything to split the doubleheader.
Â
The Macs will now go back into CSAC play to host Rosemont on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
