CLERMONT, Fla. – Immaculata University's softball squad opened the 2017 season on its spring trip Monday at the PFX Spring Games with a pair losses on the day. Immaculata was narrowly edged in the first game by Northwestern (Minn.), 6-5, and dropped the second game of the day to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 12-4.

The Mighty Macs (0-2) started the opener with a bang as they scored five runs in the top of the first against the Eagles. The inning started with five-straight hits for Immaculata, led off by
Abigail Carter's first career single.
Jessica Bormann then singled home Carter, and Bormann scored on
Ashley Rey's first career hit. Annemarie Bormann continued the string with a triple to plate Rey for the Mighty Macs' third run.
Emily Mesey then got her first hit as a Mighty Macs as Bartow headed home, and Mesey later scored on
Meghan Kugler's single.

Northwestern chipped away on Immaculata's lead scoring one run in the first, and one more run in the second. The Eagles had two singles to lead off the first inning before a ground ball to second base scored the first run. Northwestern loaded the bases in the second inning with two outs but a walk pushed its second run across the plate.

The Eagles tied the game at 5-5 in the third inning after Moriah Mauna hit a three-run home run.

The next two innings were scoreless for both teams. However, Northwestern scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth for the winning run.

Carter, Bormann, Rey, Bartow and
Michaela Petito all had two hits in the game for Immaculata. Rey, Petito and
Victoria Post each hit a double, and Bartow had the triple.

Bormann pitched four innings giving up eight hits and five runs, all earned. She walked one and struck out a pair. Petito tossed the last two innings for the Macs allowing two hits and one unearned run while walking one in the loss.

In the second game of the day, Immaculata gave up three runs in the first, and Coast Guard scored five runs in the third to lead, 8-0. The Mighty Macs got two runs back in the bottom of the third as
Sydney Sturgill singled for the first hit of the game, Kugler walked, and Carter drove in Sturgill with a RBI single up the middle. Rey later walked to load the bases for Bartow, who walked a run in for Immaculata.

Coast Guard extended its lead to 11-2 in the fourth including a two-run homer.

Immaculata looked to extend the game when it came to the plate in the bottom of the fifth, and the Mighty Macs did just that. The inning started with
Moriah Hunter and Carter both singling, and with two outs, Bartow was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mesey then delivered a RBI single to the short stop scoring Hunter. Petito then reached on a fielder's choice that had Carter scoring from third to make it an 11-4 game.

Coast Guard added one more run in the top of the sixth, and Immaculata didn't have any two-out magic in the bottom of the sixth after Hunter singled down the left field line.

Carter and Hunter each had two hits against Coast Guard.
Petito started the game and lasted three innings. Petito gave up 11 hits and eight runs while striking out two in the loss. Bormann came in and tossed one inning, giving up three hits and three runs, two earned, while
Nicole Kowalski pitched the final two innings allowing one hit, one run and walking two.

Immaculata is back in action tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. against Saint Elizabeth and again at 10:30 a.m. taking on Alfred. Â
