Softball Sweeps Clarks Summit In Home Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

IMMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University's softball team opened the home portion of its 2017 season on Thursday afternoon sweeping a pair of Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) games from Clarks Summit, 6-0 and 9-1.

Kayla Sponsel, Meghan Kugler, Jessica Bormann, Michaela Petito and Abigail Carter all had three hits during the afternoon to lead the Mighty Macs, who combined for 15 hits in the two games. Bormann and Petito also tossed complete-game wins in the circle for the Mighty Macs.

The opener was a close game as Immaculata (7-7, 4-0 CSAC) got on the scoreboard in the third inning Bormann reached base on an error, then Annemarie Bartow, Ashley Rey and Emily Mesey all followed with walks to push the first IU run across home plate. Petito hit a RBI single through the left side that scored Rey for the second run.

Following a scoreless fourth and fifth inning, the Mighty Macs scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to open the game up, 6-0. Victoria Post singled to start the inning, and Carter singled to get the leadoff runners aboard. However, Bormann reached on a fielder's choice as Post was cut down at third base. Then with two outs, Bartow walked to load the bases for Mesey, who doubled into left center plating all three runners. Petito then doubled into center field to score Mesey from second.

Petito and Kugler each had two hits in game one, and Mesey had three RBIs and Petito two runs driven in.

Bormann pitched all seven innings allowing just four hits in the shutout. She struck out six and walked one batter.

In the second game, the Defenders (4-8, 0-4 CSAC) scored their only run in the top of the first inning as Heather Maracle had a two-out triple and Allison Glennon hit a RBI single to center to score the run.

Immaculata responded in the bottom of the first with two runs on just two hits. Carter reached on an error, stole third, and then scored on an error. Bartow had a two-out single, and two batters later, Petito singled to score Bartow.

The Mighty Macs pushed three runs across in each the third and fourth innings. In the third, Bormann singled and then scored on Bartow's home run. Mesey, who walked, scored the third run on Sponsel's single later in the inning.

Isabella Mirarchi led the fourth inning off with a walk, and with the center fielder playing shallow, Carter put the ball over her head and the ball went to the fence. Mirarchi scored and Carter had an inside the park home run. Bormann then came to the plate and drove the ball over into center for back-to-back inside the park home runs.

The game ended in the bottom of the fifth as singles from Sponsel, Kugler and Mirarchi loaded the bases for Carter, who had a RBI single to win the game, 9-1.

Sponsel was 3-for-3 with one RBI in game two. Carter was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Bormann was 2-for-3, and Bartow was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

Petito allowed just two hits and one run in five innings in the circle. She struck out a career-high seven.

Immaculata hosts Keystone Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in CSAC action.
