IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Mighty Mac men's lacrosse team (2-5) turned a one-goal deficit into a 14-8 victory over Wilkes (3-4) on Wednesday afternoon at Draper Walsh Stadium by outscoring the Colonels 9-2 after halftime, including 7-0 in the third quarter. The win is the second in a row for the Macs.
Junior
Brian Shultis had a huge day with four goals and four assists for eight points while juniors
Mike Reardon and
Tyler Black also scored four goals each.
Doug Hughes had four points with two goals and two assists, and senior
Jake Kemble had two assists as well.
Black was outstanding at 11-for-17 in the faceoff circle and added 13 groundballs. Kemble led the team with five caused turnovers.
Freshman
Denton States was strong in the cage with 11 saves.
The Macs fired out of the gates as Shultis scored unassisted then Shultis provided the helper to Black to make it 2-0 just 1:23 into the game.
The Colonels got on the board with 4:39 to go before the end of the first quarter, but Shultis scored his 12
th of the season, unassisted, to stake the Macs to a 3-1 lead through one.
Wilkes came out on fire to start the second quarter as they ripped off three straight goals to take their first lead of the game at 4-3 with 9:43 remaining before the half. Black stopped the run with an unassisted tally, but Wilkes grew their lead to 6-4 with back-to-back goals.
The Mighty Macs got a key tally on a nice shot from the right wing from Reardon after a feed from behind the net by Shultis, and the game went to halftime with Wilkes in front, 6-5.
It was the Macs turn to come out on fire, like they did in the first, as Shultis scored two goals from a difficult side angle, and provided the assist on a goal to Reardon and the Macs found themselves in front, 8-6, midway through the third quarter.
IU wasn't done as they scored the next five goals, including the final four of the third quarter to take a commanding lead. Hughes and Reardon each scored twice to close out the third quarter as the Macs led 12-6 through three.
Black scored to extend the lead to 13-6 five minutes into the fourth quarter before Wilkes scored for the first time in the second half with 9:22 to go. States made a few big saves on some Colonel attempts to keep the Macs comfortably in front.
Black scored once more and the Macs would finish off the 14-8 victory.
They will return home looking for their third straight win as they host Rosemont at 1 p.m. at Draper Walsh Stadium.
