Softball Gets CSAC Road Sweep Against Cairn

LANGHORNE, Pa. – Immaculata University's softball team began Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play at Cairn University Saturday afternoon sweeping the doubleheader from the Highlanders, 13-1 and 16-0.
 
In the opener, Ashley Rey went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored, and while Immaculata pitchers Jessica Bormann and Desiree Dinko combined to give up just three hits in the Mighty Macs 13-1 win in five innings.
 
During game two, Rey was 2-for-2 with four RBIs, Emily Mesey was also 2-for-2 with two RBIs, Michaela Petito was 2-for-3 with one RBI, and Kayla Sponsel was went 3-for-4 with a team-best five RBIs. Pitchers Petito and Nicole Kowalski combined for a four-hit shutout.
 
Immaculata (5-5, 2-0 CSAC) scored in each of the first four innings of game one, including four runs in each the first and second innings. Cairn (4-2, 0-2 CSAC) scored its one run of the game in the third inning, cutting the score to 11-1 heading to the fourth.
 
Annemarie Bartow singled down the left field line to score Bormann for the Mighty Macs' first run, and Meghan Kugler doubled into left center later in the inning scoring all three Immaculata baserunners (Rey, Bartow and Petito).
 
Immaculata used four walks, three hits and two Cairn errors to score four more runs in the second inning. Abigial Carter scored on throw to second that caught Bormann stealing second. Rey later doubled and Bartow walked for Mesey to single into left center to score Rey. Petito then singled to the shortstop that brought Bartow home. Kugler then loaded the bases on a walk, and Mesey scored on a passed ball for the 8-0 lead.
 
Rey hit a three-run homer in the third for all three Immaculata runs and the 11-0 advantage.
 
Following the Highlanders getting one run back in the third, Carter and Rey each had RBI singles in the fourth to cap the scoring.
 
Victoria Post also went 2-for-2, while Kugler finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Immaculata had 14 hits for the game.
 
Bormann started and went the first three innings allowing three hits and one Cairn one while striking out three. Dinko tossed the final two innings not allowing any hits, while she struck out one and walked one.
 
Immaculata came out posting 11 runs in the first inning of game two, and tacked on one run in the second and four runs in the third.
 
The Mighty Macs' 11 runs came on seven hits, including one double, one triple and a three-run homer, along with five walks. Rey doubled to score Carter, and then Mesey hit a two-RBI single plating Moriah Hunter and Rey. Petito followed with a triple which scored Mesey, and Petito scored on Sponsel's single down the line. LeighAnn Brocious grounded out but Sydney Sturgill was able to score the seventh run for the Mighty Macs, and Carter singled to push Sponsel across home plate. Rey then hit a three-run home run, and the final run of the inning came as Bartow, who got on base with a walk, scored on an error.
 
Sponsel began the second inning with a double and scored on Isabella Mirarchi's ground ball for a 12-0 lead.
 
The third inning began with Mesey singling, Petito hitting a double, and Sturgill earning a walk to load the bases for Sponsel. Sponsel then delivered a grand slam for the Mighty Macs, extending their lead to 16-0.
 
Petito started in the circle and went three innings with one hit and one strikeout for the win. Kowalski finished the last two innings with three hits and four strikeouts.
 
Immaculata heads to Widener on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. non-conference game.
