Softball Rallies For 10-9 Win Against Wesley In Saturday Split

DOVER, Del. – Immaculata's softball team was back in action on Saturday afternoon splitting its games against Virginia Wesleyan and Wesley. The Mighty Macs began the day falling 13-3 in five innings to No. 3 Virginia Wesleyan, and they rebounded with a 10-9 win against host Wesley.
 
In the Wesley contest, the Mighty Macs (3-5) got down 9-5 after five innings, and pushed two runs across in the sixth and three more in the seventh for the comeback win.
 
In the sixth inning, Ashley Rey singled and Annemarie Bartow followed with a fielder's choice but Rey was safe on an error. Emily Mesey then singled to score Rey, and Michaela Petito singled to load the bases for the Mighty Macs. Bartow then scored on the next play to make it a 9-7 game.
 
Immaculata loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh as Jessica Bormann singled, Rey singled and Bartow was hit by a pitch. Mesey then delivered a bases clearing double into center field as the Mighty Macs took the 10-9 lead.
 
Wesley had two hits in the bottom of the seventh, but Bormann was able to use a fielder's choice and two strikeouts to get out of any trouble for the win in the circle.
 
The Wolverines had scored two runs in the first, five runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth.
 
Immaculata pushed one run across in the second inning and one more in the fourth. The Mighty Macs had the bases load in the second when Abigail Carter drew a walk for the first run of the game. Immaculata's fourth-inning run came as Kayla Sponsel doubled to lead things off and Victoria Post had a RBI single to score Isabella Mirarchi, who was pinch-running for Sponsel.
 
The Mighty Macs later posted three runs in the fifth on three hits. Bartow and Mesey both singled and Petito walked to load the bases. Sponsel reached on a fielder's choice as Bartow scored on the play. Sydney Sturgill walked to keep the bases full as Moriah Hunter singled into left field for Petito to score the fourth run, and Carter drew a RBI walk as Sponsel scored to make it a 7-5 contest.
 
Mesey finished the game 4-for-5 with four RBIs. Bormann, Rey, Bartow, Petito and Hunter all had two hits. Carter had two RBIs.
 
Petito started in the circle and went the first four innings allowing seven runs, four earned, on eight hits while striking out two and walking two. Bormann came in for the final three innings to get the win. Bormann gave up six hits, two runs, struck out five and walked one.
 
In the opener, Virginia Wesleyan pushed four runs across in each of the first two innings to plate eight runs.
 
Immaculata scored one run in the bottom of the first as its first three hitters in the lineup all singled. Carter started things off, and Bormann followed to have runners at first and second. Rey then delivered a RBI single up the middle that allowed Carter to score.
 
The Mighty Macs cut the margin to 8-3 as they scored two more runs in the bottom half of the third inning. Bartow hit a two-run home run as Nicole Kowalski, who walked, also scored.
 
Virginia Wesleyan (19-1) then scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the game short.
 
The Marlins' pitching staff had just a 0.83 team ERA heading into today's contest against the Mighty Macs, and all three of Immaculata's runs were earned.
 
Bormann started in the circle and tossed the first two innings. She allowed eight runs, walked two and struck out one in the loss. Kowalski pitched the final three innings, giving up five runs and striking out one.
 
Immaculata is scheduled to host Haverford on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. in the home opener for the Mighty Macs.
