High Scoring Mighty Macs Down Clarks Summit, 102-77

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University's men's basketball team sprung back from its loss to Neumann earlier in the week with its largest offensive production in almost three seasons against Clarks Summit University, 102-77, on Saturday afternoon inside Alumnae Hall in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.
 
The Mighty Macs (10-11, 8-6 CSAC) defeated the Defenders, 102-77, which is the most points scored by an IU squad since February 8, 2014. Immaculata also defeated Clarks Summit, known as Baptist Bible, on that day, 104-101, in double overtime. Today's game marked the first time in program history that the Mighty Macs have reached the 100-point mark in regulation. Immaculata scored 57 of its points during the second half to outdistance itself from Clarks Summit, tying the school record of most points during the second half, which was done against Gwynedd Mercy on February 4, 2008.
 
Junior Eric Pittman Jr. also had a career day as his team-leading 18 points put him over the 1,000-point mark for his collegiate career. Pittman drove into the lane putting up a jumper with 4:09 remaining in the contest to reach the mark. Pittman Jr. was also fouled on the play, and he converted his free throw for his 18th point of the day, as he was 5-for-5 at the line for the contest. Pittman also had a team-best nine rebounds and four assists.
 
Sophomore Mike Piekarski also scored 18 points as he was 8-for-13 from the field, and had five rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals. Senior Matt Simon came off the bench to spark Immaculata with 15 points, 5-for-9 from 3-point range, and three assists. Michael Griffin III had 12 points and two assists, and Roy Ferrell Jr. added nine points, four rebounds and a team-best six assists. Jordan Ambrose chipped in five points and five rebounds, and Will Chapman handed out three assists.
 
Other single-game marks set by Immaculata in today's contest include most field goal attempted (84), most 3-point field goals made (16), and most assists (25).
 
Clarks Summit (1-20, 0-14 CSAC) scored on its opening possession of the first half for a 2-0 lead, but Piekarski got Immaculata on the board at the 18:51 mark. Griffin III knocked down a 3-pointer for a 5-2 edge, but back-to-back layups by the Defenders swung the lead back in their favor, 6-5.  
 
Simon hit the first of his five three's of the contest at the 15:05 mark, giving Immaculata the lead back, 8-6, and it started what was a 7-2 run for the Mighty Macs as they extended their advantage to 12-8 by the 14-minute mark.
 
Six-straight points by Clarks Summit handed the visitors back the lead (14-12) with 12:40 remaining in the half, but Pittman Jr. tied the contest at 14-all with a layup with 11:52 to go. Pittman Jr. started a 7-0 run for Immaculata as it was up, 19-14, midway through the half.
 
Immaculata had pushed its lead to 25-18 with 9:10 left in the first half, when Clarks Summit began to chip away. A 10-2 run by the Defenders, started and capped by trey's, handed the visitors the lead once again, 28-27, with 5:51 to go. Following a Piekarski layup to give Immaculata back the advantage, Nick Peter sunk a 3-pointer for the 31-29 Clarks Summit lead with 5:15 remaining in the first half.
 
The Mighty Macs got hot with a 13-1 run that carried them into the final minute of the half for a 42-32 lead. Following a layup by the Defenders, Piekarski sent the Mighty Macs into halftime with a 3-pointer and the 45-34 lead.
 
Immaculata started the second half outscoring Clarks Summit, 15-5, during the first five minutes for a 60-41 lead. The Defenders cut the Mighty Macs lead to 11 (63-52) with 12:49 remaining in the game but Immaculata continued to pressure. Clarks Summit was still hanging around, down just 71-58, at the midway point when Immaculata turned up the pressure on a 15-6 run that increased the Mighty Macs' lead to 22 (86-64) with 5:24 left in the contest. Ferrell Jr. had seven points and Pittman Jr. five during that run for Immaculata.
 
The Mighty Macs led by as many as 32 (98-66) with 3:05 to play before the contest was over.
 
Immaculata travels to Gwynedd Mercy on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 8 p.m. for its next contest.
