ROSEMONT, Pa.- The Immaculata men's basketball team returned to Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play on Tuesday evening with a trip to Rosemont (5-7, 2-2 CSAC) in a tight game that featured eight ties, nine lead changes, and neither team leading by double digits, but it was the Ravens who pulled away late and dealt the Mighty Macs (4-7, 2-2 CSAC) an 87-83 defeat.
The game was tied at 83-83 with 1:40 to go, and following a Rosemont basket, the Mighty Macs had a good look at a three by senior
Matt Simon (13 points) in the final seconds of the game, but it was off the mark and the Ravens put the game away with two more free throws.
Sophomore
Mike Piekarski led the Mighty Macs with 19 points on a good shooting night from the field at 6-for-9 total and 3-of-5 from three-point range. Junior Eric Pittman, Jr. continued the strong start to his IU career with 17 points, while senior
Roy Ferrell Jr. had 15 points (7-for-10 FG) and team-bests with five rebounds and four assists.
Prior to the 83-83 tie, the game was deadlocked at 68-68 with 7:52 to go and the Macs took a quick two-point lead after trailing for much of the half on two free throws by Pittman, Jr. Rosemont then went on a run to grow their lead up to five at 79-74. Piekarski then hit two free throws and Ferrell Jr. knocked down a jumper to whittle the lead back down to one at 79-78.
The Ravens responded again and grew the lead back to five, but Piekarski scored five straight in back-to-back possessions to tie the game up at 83-83. Rosemont then pulled away late.
The Macs led for much of the first half until Rosemont got their first lead at 22-21 with 8:17 to go before halftime. The game remained close until the break where the Ravens took a 41-37 lead to the locker room.
Rosemont saw their lead get as big as nine early in the second half before the game got close late.
The Mighty Macs will attempt to get back in the win column on Thursday when they host Cairn at 8 p.m.
