IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata men's basketball team bounced back from a loss to Cabrini on Wednesday as they had a huge offensive output in a 99-84 victory over the visiting Keystone College Giants (5-13, 2-10 CSAC) in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) contest on Saturday afternoon. The Mighty Macs (9-10, 7-5 CSAC) logged a season-high in points, assists (23), and outrebounded the Giants heavily, 57-35.
Sophomore
Mike Piekarski led the Macs with his seventh career double-double with 18 points (7-for-11 FG) and a season-high 16 rebounds, while sophomore
Eric Pittman Jr. had his first IU double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds while tying a team-high with six assists. Senior
Matt Simon had 17 points off the bench and four assists, senior
Roy Ferrell Jr. has 13 points, six boards, and six assists, and freshman
Jordan Ambrose chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds.
The Mighty Macs led the majority of the game, including a 62-52 lead with 13:51 to go, but the Giants went on a 13-2 run to take their first lead since early in the first half at 65-64. The Macs came back quickly with a three from Simon and a lay-up from Ambrose to go back up by four, but four straight from Keystone tied the game at 69-69 with just under 10 minutes to go.
The game would be tied at 74-74 with 8:26 to go, and the Macs went on a 25-10 run to close the game and the victory. After Keystone took a one-point lead at 76-75 with 7:57 to go, the Macs scored four straight on back-to-back lay-ups from Pittman Jr. to get the lead back at 79-76.
The lead would stay small at 81-80, but a decisive 11-0 spurt from IU was the clincher for the Macs. Piekarski started it with a pair of free throws and three-pointer from Simon made it 86-80 with 3:45 to go in the game. The IU defense was stout during this stretch, punctuated by a steal from Ambrose and a feed ahead to Pittman Jr. for a big one-handed slam and an eight point lead. A pair of free throws by Ferrell Jr. and a lay-up by Piekarski made it 92-80 with 1:41 to go. The Macs finished off the victory at the free throw line.
In the first half, IU took control with an 11-0 run midway through the period. Trailing 12-11, Simon hit a three pointer to give the Macs the lead then a pair of baskets from freshman
Stephan Savage (4 points, 5 rebounds) and lay-ups by Simon and Pittman Jr. propelled the run.
The lead grew as large as 15 at 34-19 with a three pointer by
Matt Krewson with 7:34 to go in the half, but IU would go cold for the remainder of the half and Keystone closed the half on a 19-7 scoring run to make it a three-point game, 41-38 at the break.
The Macs will look to improve to 8-5 on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
