Mighty Mac Women Come Up Big Against Cabrini, 70-54

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University women's basketball captured a key Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) victory Wednesday night inside Alumnae Hall as the host Mighty Macs knocked off Cabrini University, 70-54.
 
Immaculata moves to 6-12 overall and 6-3 in the CSAC. Cabrini, which entered with the best record in the league, is now 10-9 overall, 8-2 CSAC.
 
Senior Tamyra Laws poured in a game-best 29 points and 19 rebounds, while adding three assists, two blocked shots and one steal. Laws was 11-for-19 (.579) from the field and 7 of 10 (.700) at the free throw line. Gina Cocci also scored in double figures for the Mighty Macs with 12 points (4-for-5 from the field, including two three's), and Cocci handed out seven assists. Annie Kohutka, Amber Ballinger and Theresa Walsh all finished with seven points and five rebounds. Walsh also made one block and two steals. Bailey Krewson added six rebounds and two assists. Erica Kramer also doled out three assists.
 
Immaculata shot 46.4 percent (26-56) from the field, including 56.5 percent (13-23) during the final two quarters. Cabrini was held to just 22.1 percent from the field (17-77).  
 
Cabrini started the contest with a 4-0 lead before Immaculata sunk its first basket from Kohutka with 6:36 to play in the quarter. The Mighty Macs tied the score at 4-all, but the Cavaliers took the lead back with 4:27 remaining in the quarter, and held it the rest of the quarter. Immaculata trimmed Cabrini's lead to 8-7 as Mamako Johnson had a jumper in the lane with 1:30 to go, but the Cavaliers led, 12-9, after the first 10 minutes.
 
Cabrini connected on a three-pointer on its first possession of the second quarter to push the lead back to four (15-11), but the momentum began to swing in favor of Immaculata. The Mighty Macs went on a 12-0 run during a 3:18 span that quickly put the lead in the hosts favor (23-15) with 5:57 to play in the second quarter. Laws had seven points during the spurt. Immaculata led by as many as 13 (33-20) with 1:31 to play before halftime, but a pair of Cabrini free throws and a three-pointer in the closing minute allowed the Mighty Macs to take 33-25 advantage into the locker room.
 
Immaculata maintained its lead the rest of the game, but Cabrini did cut the game close with a run midway through the third quarter. The Mighty Macs were ahead 39-30 when a six-point run by the Cavaliers trimmed the lead to just 39-36 with 6:03 left in the quarter. Immaculata quickly built the lead back to eight (44-36) with a 5-0 run from two points from Laws and a free throw and layup by Tess Kieffer, and the Mighty Macs still held the lead by eight (52-44) at the end of the third quarter.
 
The Mighty Macs took a double-digit lead (56-44) at the opening of the fourth quarter as Ballinger and Laws each had buckets. However, the Cavaliers made one last attempt to cut into the Mighty Macs lead with an 8-2 run that put the guests down 58-52 with 5:50 remaining. Determined not to let the lead slip away, the Mighty Macs ended the game on a 12-2 run. Laws ended the game with seven of Immaculata's 12 points in the spurt. The Mighty Macs were also 5-for-6 at the free throw line during the final minute.
 
Immaculata hosts Keystone on Saturday at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, Immaculata is hosting a Youth Skills Clinic at 10 a.m. inside Alumnae Hall to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The clinic is free for girls 12 and under.
