Box Score

IMMACULATA, Pa.- Looking to build off their win on Saturday over Clarks Summit, the Immaculata men's basketball team (7-9, 5-4 CSAC) hosted Gwynedd Mercy (13-3, 7-2 CSAC) in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action on Wednesday night at Alumnae Hall, and in a tight game the whole way, the Griffins pulled away late to deal the Macs a 91-84 defeat.

The Mighty Macs turned the ball over just five times and forced 21 of their own, but they struggled from the field as they made just 27 of their 81 attempts.

Junior Eric Pittman Jr. led the Mighty Macs with 21 points, while freshman Jordan Ambrose poured in 18 on 7-of-13 shooting.  Senior Roy Ferrell Jr. had 12 points and eight boards with three assists, and senior Matt Simon had 15 points off the bench with three assists.  Sophomore Mike Piekarski led the squad with nine boards to go with nine points.

The game was tied 46-46 with 16 minutes to go in the game when IU touched off a 12-4 run to take an eight point lead, their largest of the game.  Ambrose did most of the heavy lifting as he scored seven points and Pittman Jr. contributed the rest with five, including a three to cap the run and put the Macs up 58-50 with 13 minutes remaining.

Ambrose continued his great string of play with another three to keep IU up eight at 63-55 with 11:42 to go, but Gwynedd worked to get it back to the 10th tie of the game at 67-67 with eight minutes remaining.

Pittman Jr. gave the Mighty Macs their final lead of the game with 6:54 to go when he hit a free throw to make it 72-71, but the Griffins scored the next five to go up by four.

The Griffins kept IU at arms' length for the closing minutes, but IU had one final charge remaining.  Trailing 87-80 with 34 seconds to go, Ambrose knocked down a free throw, and following a rebound off a missed free throw, Pittman Jr. buried a three from the corner to cut it 87-84.  However, the Griffins would knock down four straight at the line to close out IU.

The first half was very tight with five ties and nine lead changes.  Gwynedd raced out to a nine-point lead early, but the Macs battled back to finally grab the lead with 3:14 to go on a pair of free throws by freshman Stephan Savage.

Trailing 33-32, Piekarski hit a three and Pittman Jr. had a lay-up to give IU a 37-34 lead heading into the locker room.

The Mighty Macs will look for the season sweep of Cairn as they travel to Langhorne on Saturday.
