Softball Takes Two From Cedar Crest

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata swept a crucial Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) twinbill on Wednesday afternoon at the IU Softball Field against Cedar Crest, 6-5 and 8-6.
 
The wins move the Mighty Macs ahead of the Falcons in the CSAC standings into fifth place with an 11-7 league and 13-19 overall mark. Cedar Crest falls to 19-17, 10-8.
 
In the opener, Immaculata scored three runs in the second inning as Annemarie Bartow walked, and then advanced to third as Meghan Kugler reached on an error. Paige Hughes then reached on a sacrifice to load the bases for Caitlyn Hudock. Hudock singled into right field scoring Bartow, and Lauren Penn followed with a double into left center bringing Kugler and Hughes across home plate.
 
Cedar Crest took the lead after scoring four runs in the top of the third highlighted by a two-run home run.
 
However, the Mighty Macs came back in the bottom of the third with its first three hitters all reaching safely. Melissa Ejk singled through the left side to start things off, and Bartow doubled into left field. Ejk scored on a throwing error by the catcher trying to hold Ejk at third base, and Bartow scored when Caitlin Brasier singled through the right side. Immaculata led 5-4 after three innings.
 
The Falcons tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth as the first batter of the inning singled and Cedar Crest was able to advance her around the bases.
 
The Mighty Macs responded in the bottom half of the fifth with Kugler doubling down the left field line, and Hudock delivered a two-out RBI single to left for what would prove the game-winning run.
 
Hudock was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Penn was 2-for-2 with two RBIs in game one.
 
Brasier started and pitched the first four innings allowing five hits, four runs and two walks. Kugler came on and tossed the final three innings to get credit with the win. Kugler gave up one runs, two hits and struck out one.
 
In the nightcap, Immaculata got in front early with four runs in the first. The Mighty Macs started the game with a single by Kelsey Collecechio, RBI triple by Jessica Bormann, RBI double from Ejk and a walk by Bartow. Ejk later scored the Mighty Macs third run on a wild pitch. Hughes hit a two-out RBI single to score Bartow for the 4-0 advantage.
 
Cedar Crest got single runs in the second and third innings from solo home runs.
 
Immaculata scored three runs in the second to make it a 7-1 game after the first two batters the Mighty Macs sent to the plate reached on errors setting Ejk up for a two-run scoring double into left center. Ejk later scored on Bartow's ground ball.
 
The Falcons home run in the third made it a 7-2 contest, but the Mighty Macs got one run back in the bottom of the inning as Bartow doubled to again score Ejk.
 
Cedar Crest made a comeback in the fourth and fifth innings by scoring two runs in each at-bat to make it 8-6, and the game would be called for darkness after the Falcons batted in the top half of the fifth.
 
Ejk was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and three runs scored in the second game. Bartow had two RBIs on a 1-for-2 line in the contest.
 
Bormann pitched all five innings for the Mighty Macs. She allowed eight hits, six runs, five earned and struck out three batters.
 
Immaculata is scheduled to be at Notre Dame on Friday for a 3 p.m. start.
