Softball Falls To Widener In Home Opener

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata's softball team was swept by Widener in its home opener Tuesday afternoon. The visiting Pride was able to hold off the Mighty Macs in game one, 13-9, and won the nightcap, 13-3, in six innings.
 
Immaculata (3-13), trailing 10-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth, had its bats come to life to extend the game by scoring six runs, and the Mighty Macs eventually got within one run after they batted in the sixth.
 
The Mighty Macs got on the scoreboard in the first inning as Annemarie Bartow hit a two-run home run to straight-away center.
 
Widener (13-3) jumped in front of Immaculata with three runs in each the second and third innings, and added four more in the fourth to lead 10-2.
 
Immaculata loaded the bases in the fifth with no outs thanks to a single by Melissa Ejk sandwiched around walks from Tabitha Mulholland and Bartow. Caitlin Hudock the scored Mulholland and Ejk with her double. Meghan Kugler hit a two-RBI single to make it a 10-6 contest. Following Lauren Penn's single, and with two outs, Kelsey Collevechio singled to score both Kugler and Penn making it a two-run game, 10-8.
 
Immaculata's first three batters of the sixth all reached as Ejk singled, Bartow doubled, and Hudock hit a RBI single, cutting Widener's lead to one run (10-9).
 
However, the guests were able to capitalize in the top half of the seventh for three runs, and Immaculata's comeback came up just short.
 
Collevechio went 3-for-5 with two RBIs in the game, and Ejk was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Bartow was 2-for-2 with two RBIs, two runs scored and one walk, while Hudock went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
 
Caitlin Brasier started the game for the Mighty Macs and went 3.1 innings. She gave up 12 hits that resulted in 10 runs, nine earned. Becca Reifer tossed the final 3.2 innings allowing four hits, three runs, all unearned, and struck out two.
 
In the nightcap, Immaculata responded to Widener's one run in the first with two runs of its own. Following Jessica Bormann reaching on a Widener throwing error, Ejk doubled to plate the first run. Bartow then followed with a double to score Ejk and give the Mighty Macs the 2-1 lead.
 
The lead would be short-lived as Widener plated four runs in the second. The Pride added two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth before capping the game with four runs in the sixth.
 
Immaculata was able to get one run back in its half of the sixth as Bartow led the inning off with a triple, and scored on Hudock's RBI single.
 
Bartow was 2-for-3 to lead the Mighty Macs in the second game.
 
Bormann started the game in the circle and pitched the first five innings. She allowed 14 hits and gave up nine runs, eight earned. Kugler pitched the final inning giving up five hits and four runs.
 
Immaculata returns to CSAC action with weekend with Keystone on Friday at 3 p.m.
