Mighty Macs Pull Off Amazing Senior Night Comeback, 90-89

Box Score

IMMACULATA, Pa.- On Senior Night for Immaculata men's basketball players in their final game at Alumnae Hall, the Mighty Macs gave them one to remember with an amazing 16-2 run to end the game to erase a 13-point deficit and defeat Rosemont (12-12, 10-7 CSAC) by a score of 90-89 in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) thriller.  The Mighty Macs trailed by as many as 21 points in the game, and by double digits much of the way, but used a late surge led by junior Roy Ferrell Jr. with 29 points to pull off the stunning comeback.

Prior to the game, the Mighty Macs (10-14, 9-8 CSAC) recognized Tony Calamaro, Rodney Duncan, Mark Hueber, and Ron Melton who were all playing in the final game in Mighty Mac uniforms at Alumnae Hall.

In addition to Ferrell Jr., junior Matt Simon had 12 points on four three balls, while Calamaro (4 assists), sophomore Will Chapman (4 assists), and junior Michael Griffin III all had nine points, and junior Michael Sturdivant Jr. chipped in with eight.  As a team, the Mighty Macs shot 32-for-58 (55.2%) from the field, and 9-for-17 (52.9%) from beyond the arc, but Rosemont was just as deadly as they were 33-for-59 (55.9%) from the field.

Trailing 87-74 with 3:25 remaining, the Mighty Macs were in need of a spark for one last chance to come back, and Chapman and Ferrell Jr. provided it.  After a Calamaro lay-up, Chapman got fouled as he laid one in to convert an old-fashion three point play to cut the deficit to 87-79 with 2:22 to go.  Following a missed free throw by Rosemont on the front end of a one-and-one, Ferrell Jr. laid one in and the Macs were the closest they had been since the first half at 87-81 with exactly two minutes remaining.

The Mighty Mac defense then clamped down again and forced a turnover with a steal by Simon, who tossed a long outlet pass to Chapman who finished off the lay-up while getting fouled again, and he would hit the free throw and the Macs trailed 87-84 with 1:22 on the clock.

After the Ravens failed to convert again on the front end of a one-and-one, Ferrell Jr. took a pass from Chapman on the left wing and buried the triple to tie the game at 87-87 with 1:02 left.  Rosemont took a timeout, and converted for their first points in nearly three minutes on a jumper by Clayton Wolfe to put the Ravens back in front 89-87 with 28 second to go.

Ferrell Jr. then delivered yet another clutch basket when he drove the right side of the lane, got the layup to go and was fouled as it went through the hoop to tie the game at 89-89.  He then knocked down the free throw to give the Mighty Macs their first lead of the day at 90-89 with 7.4 seconds left on the clock.

Rosemont had one last chance, but the stingy IU defense forced a steal, and the Mighty Macs capped off the big comeback in front of a packed house at Alumnae Hall.

Rosemont took control right from the jump, as they led 23-4 6:30 into the game and got their lead to as large as 21 at 30-9 midway through the first half.  The Mighty Macs made the deficit more manageable with a 13-2 run at one point to make it 39-34, but the Ravens took a 49-38 lead to the locker room.

The Macs never got closer than nine until the final moments of their comeback.

With the win tonight and a loss by Centenary, the Mighty Macs are now in a tie with the Cyclones for fifth place, just one game back of Rosemont heading into the season finale on Saturday at Neumann at 3 p.m.  Centenary and Rosemont will play Saturday afternoon as well.

NOTES: Ferrell Jr. has now scored 892 points in his Immaculata career, moving him into 4th place on the school's all-time scoring list as he passed Brandon Smith (2010-14) … Simon is just four three-pointers away from breaking the all-time made threes record in a career.
