Men's Basketball Not Able To Hold Off Gwynedd Mercy, 75-73

Box Score

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata men's basketball was unable to tie the game up in the final seconds as the visiting Gwynedd Mercy Griffins stayed perfect in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play with a 75-73 win against the host Mighty Macs on Monday night inside Alumnae Hall.

Immaculata (7-12, 6-6 CSAC) tied the program mark for most three-point field goals in a single game, which it had set earlier this season against Marywood, as the Mighty Macs connected on 15 three's during the contest. The Macs shot 62.5 percent (15 of 24) from three-point range for the contest. Immaculata is now just seven three's away from tying the single-season mark for 3-pointers of 175.

Rodney Duncan led the way with 18 points, including leading the 3-point barrage with five, and he had three assists. Tony Calamaro poured in 14 points, while both Michael Griffins III and Ron Melton each had 11 points. Roy Ferrell Jr. finished with 10 points, and Mike Piekarski led the Mighty Macs on the glass with five rebounds to go along with nine points and three assists. Duncan, Calamaro and Griffin III all had four rebounds.

It was a game of runs during the entire 40 minutes of action, but it was the Griffins two made free throws with 26 seconds remaining in the contest that proved to be the game winner. Immaculata had tied the contest at 73-all with 1:15 remaining on a Tony Calamaro jumper and that would be all the Mighty Macs wrote.

Immaculata jumped in front with a 3-pointer from Duncan, and would lead the entire first half. Holding a five-point advantage (20-15) at the 12:18 mark, Immaculata started one of its runs as the Mighty Macs knocked down four three's to help outscore the Griffins, 22-7, during a six-minute span. The run gave Immmaculata its largest lead of the contest at 42-22 with 6:11 to play in the first half.

However, the game of runs then swung in favor of the Griffins as they closed out the first half on an 11-0 spurt to trail by just nine at halftime, 42-33.

After trading three's to start the second half which made it 45-36 in favor of the Macs at the 18:46 mark, the Griffins again went on a run to chip away at Immaculata's lead. Gwynedd Mercy used a 13-3 run that gave the visitors their first edge in the contest, 49-48, with 14:13 to go.

Gwynedd Mercy would never lead by more than six, and Immaculata would tie the score three different times, but the Macs could not make a charge at retaking the lead.

Immaculata heads to Cabrini on Wednesday evening for an 8 p.m. meeting against the Cavaliers.
