Box Score
IMMACULATA, Pa.- Immaculata senior
Roy Ferrell Jr. became the fourth player in Mighty Mac men's basketball history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for his career as he recorded the third double-double of his career with 22 points and a career-high 14 rebounds to help lead IU to a convincing 79-63 home Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) victory over Centenary (4-3, 2-1 CSAC) on Saturday afternoon to improve to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in CSAC play. Ferrell Jr. entered the contest needing just eight points to accomplish the feat and he knocked down a jumper with 12:29 to play to join Kyle Finklea, Rob Siter, and Nelson Torres as the only other players in program history to reach the milestone.
Senior
Matt Simon also had a good game as he knocked down four triples for 14 points while filling up the stat sheet with six rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Junior
Will Chapman had a season-high 12 points on a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, and freshman
Jordan Ambrose scored seven points in just 10 minutes of play.
The Mighty Macs used a dominant first half where they outscored the Cyclones 45-25 to take control of the game, and they never allowed them to trim the deficit to single digits in the second half as they knocked down 13 triples on the afternoon.
Centenary jumped out early as they took an 8-3 lead, but the Macs responded quickly with a 17-3 run of their own to take a nine point lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
A three by Simon started the run, and following a pair of free throws by sophomore
Mike Piekarski (8 points, 6 rebounds), Ferrell Jr. hit a lay-up, followed by a three from senior
Michael Griffin III to put the Macs in front 15-9.
Ferrell Jr. then hit a three-pointer and eclipsed the 1,000-point mark with a jumper on the next possession to stake IU to a nine-point lead at 20-11 early in the first half.
The Cyclones whittled the IU lead down to one point at 20-19 with 8:27 to go, but a 21-2 burst by the Macs over the next six minutes gave Immaculata a comfortable margin that they would enjoy the rest of the day. In that span, the IU defense forced eight straight misses and four turnovers by the Cyclones as their only points came from a pair of free throws.
A pair of traditional three-point plays by junior
Matt Krewson (6 points) sparked the run, while a pair of triples by Ambrose gave the Macs a comfortable margin at 45-25 heading into the break.
At one point in the second half, the Cyclones got the deficit all the way down to 11 points at 57-46 with 8:34 remaining but Ferrell Jr. scored five straight points to push the advantage back up to 16.
Centenary once more got it down to 11, but Chapman drilled a pair of threes in a two-minute span to open up a 21-point lead as the Macs salted away their second straight CSAC win.
IU will now travel to Cabrini on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. looking to make it three in a row.
