GRANTHAM, Pa.- The Immaculata men's basketball team travelled to Messiah College to play the hosts of the TownPlace Suites Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night, and the Macs (0-2) were unable to climb out of an early hole in a 92-60 defeat to the Falcons (2-0). The Mighty Macs will play Mt. St. Vincent tomorrow afternoon in the consolation game.
Senior
Roy Ferrell Jr. had a team-high 17 points (7-for-14 FG), while senior
Matt Simon knocked down three triples for 13 points. Freshman
Jordan Ambrose had a team-high five rebounds while scoring four points, and junior
Will Chapman had a team-best four assists while adding five points.
The Mighty Macs shot 21-for-59 (35.6%) from the field while knocking down five three's and shooting 13-for-21 (61.9%) from the free throw line.
Immaculata fell behind quickly as Messiah scored the first 16 points of the game in the opening 3:01 before Ambrose had a tip-in off a missed three for the first points of the day for the Macs. Messiah would continue to put pressure on the Macs as they swelled their lead to 20 points despite a pair of free throws by Ambrose.
The lead would get as large as 21 in the first half at 43-15 before a 5-0 spurt by Chapman on a three-point play, and a pair of free throws by junior
Matt Krewson trimmed the deficit back to 43-20. The teams would go to the locker room with Messiah in front 48-22.
Messiah led 55-28 with 17:14 to go in the game before IU ripped off a 12-2 run to cut the Messiah lead to 57-40 with 14:19 left in the game. Sophomore
Mike Piekarski hit a jumper before five straight by Ferrell Jr., a triple by Simon, and a lay-up from freshman
Josh Singleton.
That would be the closest the Macs would get the rest of the game as the Falcons would grow their lead throughout the second half on their way to the 92-60 defeat.
