Mighty Macs Fall At Delaware Valley

Box Score

DOYLESTOWN, Pa.- The Immaculata men's basketball team was playing in their final local non-conference game prior to a weekend tournament at Hampden-Sydney, and the Mighty Macs (2-6) battled in the first half at Delaware Valley (9-1), but the Aggies outscored the Macs, 41-18, after the break in an 85-50 Immaculata defeat.

Coming off a career-best effort on Tuesday night, junior Michael Griffin III led IU with nine points.  In total, the Mighty Macs had 10 scorers.  Freshmen Morgan Bailey (6 points), James Willis (4 points), and Sean Dougherty (first career start) all played roles for IU.  Freshman Cordell Lord had a team-high four assists to go with six points.

In the first half, the Mighty Macs struggled out of the gates as they trailed 11-1 through the first six and a half minutes with a free throw by senior Ron Melton (5 points, 6 rebounds) as the only point.  At the 13:15 mark, Griffin III buried his first of three first half triples for the first field goal of the game for the Macs as they trailed 11-4.

The Aggies would grow their lead up to 13 points, their largest to that point, at 24-11 midway through the first half, but the Macs chipped away with a 10-2 run.  Griffin III jumpstarted the run with another three, and Lord answered a Del Val bucket with one of his own.  Griffin III then hit his final three of the first half before a lay-up by Dougherty capped the run with IU down just five points at 26-21.

The Macs held Delaware Valley without a point for nearly three minutes, but they got hot from deep and knocked down three threes to touch off a 9-2 run and go up by 12 points, 35-23.  A lay-up by Bailey halted the run.

The game would go back-and-forth with Bailey knocking down a jumper for his third field goal of the half just before the break to send the game to the locker room with IU trailing 44-32.

In the second half, the Mighty Macs were never able to edge any closer than their halftime deficit as they struggled at the offensive end of the floor.  Much like the first half, IU got off to a slow start with the Aggies scoring the first seven points of the half before Melton halted the run with a lay-up.

Senior Rodney Duncan (5 points, 6 rebounds) would hit a three pointer to make it a 51-37 contest, but Delaware Valley would go on a 14-2 run to put the game out of reach at 65-39.

The Macs would go on to fall, 85-50.

This weekend, the Mighty Macs will head to Hampden-Sydney for a weekend tournament.  They will face the hosts on Saturday at 5 p.m., and will play either William Peace or Albright at 2 or 4 p.m. on Sunday.

NOTES: Junior Roy Ferrell Jr. moved into ninth place on the all-time scoring list with 598 points, passing Sean Fordham (2005-09).
