Mighty Macs Take First CSAC Loss Of The Season At Cabrini

Box Score

RADNOR, Pa.- The Immaculata women's basketball team travelled to Cabrini on Thursday night as the only two unbeaten teams in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) with first place on the line, and Cabrini (14-3, 8-0 CSAC) seized control of the game early and the Mighty Macs (9-7, 6-1 CSAC) were unable to recover in a 71-40 defeat.  With the loss, Immaculata drops into sole possession of second place.

Senior Brittany Merkle led the Mighty Macs with 14 points and five rebounds, all in the second half, while seniors Alison Zimny, Adriana Sciascia, and Sara Smith each had six points.

After an opening basket by Cabrini, Smith tied the game with a jumper, but the Cavaliers then went on a 19-5 run over the next five minutes to push their lead to double digits.  Zimny accounted for all five points, and senior Lindsay Cras ended the spurt with a lay-up to cut the deficit to 21-9, but that was the closest Immaculata would get the rest of the way.

The Cavaliers ran their advantage up to 31-13 with a 10-4 spurt around two buckets by senior Reilly Larkin, and Smith ended the run with a lay-up with 6:01 to go before halftime.  Cabrini then held the Mighty Macs scoreless for the rest of the half and took a 39-15 advantage to the locker room.

Early in the second half, the Mighty Macs battled and cut it to 22 on three different occasions on buckets by Sciascia and Merkle, and then trimmed it to 21 points at 48-27 on a jumper by senior Mackie Fitzgerald, but Cabrini had a response every time to keep Immaculata at arms' length.

Cabrini would keep their lead over 21 points the rest of the way and took over first place with the 71-40 victory.

Immaculata will look to start a new winning streak with a 1 p.m. game on Saturday afternoon at Alumnae Hall against Baptist Bible.

NOTES: This was the second straight season the Mighty Macs started their CSAC schedule with six straight victories … In the 2013-14 season, IU won their first nine games on their way to a CSAC Championship game appearance.
