Men's Basketball Suffers First CSAC Setback At Keystone, 89-87

Box Score

LA PLUME, Pa.- After winning their first five Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) games of the year since the 2007-08 season, the Mighty Macs (7-6, 5-1 CSAC) looked to extend their streak to six, but Keystone (2-9, 2-4 CSAC) grabbed a lead early in the second half and never looked back as they dealt the Immaculata men's basketball team, an 89-87 defeat.

Senior Mamadou Diakite continued his standout senior season with his fifth double-double of the season, 12th of his career, and third in as many games with a team-high 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore Roy Ferrell Jr. followed up his career-high performance from Saturday with 16 more points today and seven rebounds, while fellow sophomore Matt Simon also had 16 points with four three-pointers.  Juniors Ron Melton and Rodney Duncan each chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds apiece.

The Mighty Macs took a 39-35 lead into the locker room, but Keystone wrestled the lead back at 44-43 with 17:26 to go, and they would not allow Immaculata to have the lead the rest of the game.

Trailing by just two at 47-45, the Mighty Macs missed six of their next eight shots, which allowed the Giants to go on a 12-4 run that put them up by 10 at 59-49 with 12:43 remaining in the game.  A lay-up by the reigning CSAC Player of the Week, Melton, put a halt to the run.

Keystone would continue to lead as they ran their advantage all the way up to 13 points at 75-62 with 6:40 to go, and they would hold that 13-point advantage with just 3:48 to go.

The Mighty Macs trailed 87-76 with 46 seconds remaining, and needed another huge comeback to preserve their undefeated record like they had against Cabrini six days ago, but they were unable to do so.  Ferrell Jr., Simon, and Duncan hit threes down the stretch to get to the final of 89-87.

Immaculata had a chance to run away with the game in the first half.  They trailed 16-15 midway through the first half, but they went on an 18-4 run over the next five minutes to take a commanding 33-20 advantage.  Simon, Diakite, and Ferrell Jr. combined for all 18 points in the run.

However, while holding a 37-25 lead, Immaculata was outscored 10-2 in the final four minutes of the first half to take only a four-point lead to the locker room.

Immaculata will look to bounce back tomorrow night, Wednesday, January 14th, when they travel to Cairn for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
