Softball Keeps Rolling With Sweep Against Gwynedd Mercy

IMMACULATA, Pa. – After cruising to the win in game one, Immaculata University needed a walk-off single by Danielle Palmisano to capture game two for the sweep of Gwynedd Mercy in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) softball action. The Mighty Macs opened the day with a 7-1 win and was able to win game two, 4-3.
 
Immaculata improved to 17-7 overall and 14-2 in the CSAC. Gwynedd Mercy dropped to 6-15 overall, 6-4 CSAC.
 
Behind a three-hitter by Meagan Fitzgerald (10-2), Immaculata scored three runs in the first and four more in the fifth to lead the whole game.
 
Rachel Kelly led the Mighty Macs off with a double. Meghan Kugler singled to plate Kelly for the first run. Two errors by the Griffins loaded the bases for Palmisano, who doubled to score two more runs.
 
Neither team would score until Gwynedd Mercy got one run in the fourth.
 
Immaculata broke through for four runs in the fifth. Palmisano singled, Jenny Barnholt reached on an error and Christiana Donofry walked to load the bases. Rachel Kelly then singled in one run, and Jessica DeCastro had two RBI with her single. Kugler closed out the scoring with a RBI-single.
 
Kugler went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the opener. Kelly, DeCastro and Palmisano each had two hits, and Palmisano had two RBI.
 
Gwynedd Mercy scored first in game two with one run in the second, and the Griffins would hold the lead until the Mighty Macs scored in the bottom of the third.
 
Liz Biddle hit a two-run home run as the Mighty Macs took a 2-1 edge on the Griffins.
 
Immaculata added one more run in the fifth as DeCastro doubled and came around to score on Biddle's RBI-single.
 
Gwynedd Mercy got one run back in the sixth, and then tied the game at 3-3 with one more run in the top of the seventh.
 
As Immaculata came to bat in the bottom of the seventh, Biddle singled on a bunt to get on base. Biddle then advanced to third on an error as Samantha Strickland was trying putting down the sacrifice bunt. Palmisano then delivered the winning run as her single brought Biddle home.
 
DeCastro and Biddle both had three hits during game two, and Biddle had three RBI. Strickland and Palmisano both were 2-for-3 in the game.
 
Palmisano (5-3) picked up the win in the circle allowing just one earned run on six hits.
 
Immaculata is slated to play Alvernia in non-conference action on Tuesday beginning at 3 p.m.
