Softball Takes Both Ends From Cairn

IMMACULATA, Pa. – A four-run inning in each game helped Immaculata University to sweep Cairn University in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) softball action on Friday afternoon. The Mighty Macs won the opener, 6-1, and escaped with the 9-6 victory in the nightcap.
 
Immaculata improves to 15-7 overall and 12-2 in the CSAC with the two wins. Cairn drops to 8-15 overall, 3-9 CSAC.
 
In the opener, each team scored one run in the first to be deadlocked at 1-1. Immaculata scored its run as Meghan Kugler hit a two-out double and Liz Biddle had a RBI single.
 
The Mighty Macs broke though in their half of the third with four runs to grab the 5-1 lead. After getting Immaculata's first two hitters out, Kugler reached on an error to keep the inning alive. Biddle then doubled into right center, which allowed Kugler to score. Samantha Strickland then had a RBI single to right that brought Biddle home. Danielle Palmisano then walked, and both Strickland and Palmisano would score as Brittany Merkle reached base off an error.
 
Immaculata added one more run in the sixth as Jessica DeCastro had a RBI single that scored Melissa Ejk, who had singled.
 
Biddle went 3-for-3 with two RBI in the opener.
 
Meagan Fitzgerald picked up her ninth win of the season as she gave up just six hits, one unearned run, and struck out nine in seven innings of work.
 
In the nightcap, after Cairn scored one run in the first, Immaculata answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Rachel Kelly led the inning off with a single, and she scored on the next play as DeCastro had a bunt single that the pitcher threw away that allowed Kelly to score. Biddle then had her second double of the day to plate DeCastro. Strickland then reached on an error to put two runners on base for the Mighty, and both would come around to score on Caitlyn Hudock's single.
 
The Highlanders tied the game at 4-4 with three runs in the top of the second, but Immaculata responded quickly with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Christiana Donofry walked, stole second and scored on Kelly's single to right field. Biddle then hit a two-run home run to center field for the final two runs and the 7-4 lead.
 
Cairn got two runs back in the fourth on a walk and two doubles. However, the Highlanders never got any closer than 7-6 after their half of the fourth.
 
Immaculata added two more runs in the sixth as Barnholt had a two-RBI single to left center.
 
Hudock finished the second game 3-for-4 with one RBI. Kelly, Biddle and Strickland all were 2-for-4, and Biddle had three RBI while Kelly drove in one run. Barnholt had two RBI.
 
Kugler started in the circle and pitched 3.1 innings allowing six runs, three earned, on six hits. Palmisano came in and pitched the final 3.2 innings giving up just three hits while striking out five.
 
Immaculata hosts Gwynedd Mercy tomorrow at 1 p.m.
