Softball Earns Split With Wesley

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University's softball team split its non-conference doubleheader with Wesley College Tuesday afternoon. The Mighty Macs won the opener, 6-4, and fell in the nightcap, 7-0.
 
Immaculata (6-6) plated four runs in the second inning of game one that was all started by a dropped fly ball by Wesley's right fielder that allowed Samantha Strickland to reach. Brittany Merkle followed Strickland with a walk, and Meghan Kugler singled through the left side to load the bases. After a fly ball out for the second out of the inning, Christiana Donofry earned a walk to push Immaculata's first run in. Rachel Kelly then hit a bases-clearing double into right center to put the Mighty Macs in front, 4-0.
 
After two scoreless innings for each team, Wesley (12-6) got a pair of two-run home runs in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4.
 
Immaculata was able to break the tie in the bottom of the sixth with two runs. The Mighty Macs got consecutive singles by Kugler, Jenny Barnholt and Donofry to load up the bases. Kelly then singled up the middle to score one run, and Jessica DeCastro hit a sacrifice fly that scored the Mighty Macs' second run.
 
Immaculata banged out 10 hits during the game led by two hits each from Kelly, Danielle Palmisano and Kugler. Kelly finished with four RBI.
 
Meagan Fitzgerald (4-2) pitched the complete game allowing four runs on three hits while striking out five batters.
 
Immaculata managed six hits in the second game but was unable to score. Donofry led the squad with two hits.
 
Wesley scored in three-straight innings as the Wolverines got two runs in the third, one in the fourth and four more in the fifth.  
 
Kugler (1-2) started in the circle and lasted 4.2 innings giving up seven runs, four earned, on eight hits and striking out three. Palmisano came in and finished the game going 2.1 innings. She gave up four hits and struck out three.
 
Immaculata hosts Marywood tomorrow at 3 p.m. in a make-up CSAC doubleheader.
