IMMACULATA, Pa.- Trailing by as many as 16 at one point and 10 at the half, Immaculata men's basketball (10-11, 8-6 CSAC) staged a furious second half rally and outscored the Knights 42-29 in the final 20 minutes to claim the 69-66 victory, the 100
th in the program's history. The teams traded the lead seven times in the final 6:45, but the Mighty Macs grabbed the 60-59 lead with 3:34 remaining and never relinquished it the rest of the way.
Freshman
Roy Ferrell Jr. led the Mighty Macs with 17 points and a school record-tying eight assists, including six straight points that gave IU the lead every time, including the bucket to put them up 60-59.
As a team, Immaculata shot 55.6% (25-for-45) from the field for the game, and 12-for-14 from the line in the second half to help ice the game away. The Mighty Macs had 22 assists on 25 made field goals, giving them 307 helpers for the season, the most in a single season in IU history.
Junior
Barry Brockington (9 boards) had 13 points and sophomore
Rodney Duncan had 12 points, including 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
Neumann dominated the first half getting their lead to as large as 27-11, before the Mighty Macs trimmed the deficit to 37-27 at the break.
The Knights extended the advantage to 40-29 early in the half before Immaculata started their comeback. The Macs trailed 50-42 with 10:21 to go before staging a 12-2 run to take their first lead since the first bucket of the game.
Senior
Brandon Smith (9 points) converted a traditional three-point play before five straight by freshman
Matt Simon (7 points), and Brockington tied it with a jumper from the top of the key at 52-52. Duncan gave IU the lead with 6:45 to go on a layup to start a three minute stretch where neither team led by more than two.
Over the next three minutes, the teams exchanged leads six times, with Ferrell Jr. scoring all of the buckets lifting them to a 60-59 lead with 3:34 to go.
The Mighty Macs then knocked down 9 of their final 10 free throws to put the game away as Neumann's final three point attempt was off the mark.
Immaculata is now 8-6 in CSAC play, keeping them in fourth place in the league.
Immaculata is scheduled to play Cabrini tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. on the road before travelling to Marywood on Saturday at 2 p.m.
NOTES: Smith moved into sixth on the field goals attempted list with 546, passing Sean Fordham (2005-09).
