IMMACULATA, Pa.- After having their winning streak snapped on Wednesday at Rosemont, the Immaculata men's basketball team (8-10, 6-5 CSAC) bounced back with a critical 76-59 victory over Keystone (9-10, 6-6 CSAC) on Saturday afternoon at Alumnae Hall. The Mighty Macs led by three at the half, but they outscored the Giants 49-35 in the second half to put the game away and move back over .500 in CSAC play with a season sweep of Keystone.
Five players were in double figures for the Mighty Macs led by senior
Brandon Smith with 18 points and six rebounds on a perfect 8-for-8 from the field. Junior
Barry Brockington had 15 points (9-for-10 from the line) seven boards, and five assists for IU. Sophomore
Rodney Duncan (11 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals), freshman
Roy Ferrell Jr. (10 points, 5 assists), and sophomore
Tyreek Peeples (10 points, 4 assists) were the other double digit scorers for the Mighty Macs.
The Mighty Macs held a 45-32 advantage on the glass, had 21 assists on 25 made field goals, and they held Keystone to just 33% shooting from the field (20-for-60).
Immaculata held a 27-24 lead heading to the locker room after a half that was dominated by defense. The Mighty Macs continued to hold the lead as they led 37-33 with 12:14 left in the game. They then used a 13-3 run to take control of the game as Keystone never got the deficit back to single digits. Smith scored seven points and Ferrell Jr. knocked down a three-pointer and had a traditional three-point play to fuel the run.
After the Giants hit a three-point play of their own, the Mighty Macs went on a 9-0 run to extend the advantage all the way to twenty points. Smith scored four points while Duncan hit three free throws, and Brockington converted a lay-up to make it 59-39 with 5:54 to go in the game.
Immaculata got the lead to as large as twenty two points at 72-50 after a three-pointer by Peeples with 2:26 to go before closing out the 76-59 win.
In the first half, IU got out to a fast start with leads of 11-2 and 16-5 before Keystone trimmed it to as small as two at 22-20 with 3:40 left.
The Mighty Macs completed the season sweep of Keystone for the first time in school history and in the two games, Immaculata never trailed in either game.
Immaculata will travel to Cabrini on Wednesday at 6:30 looking to win their fifth game in their last six tries.
