Women's Basketball Comeback Falls Short, 84-80

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University women's basketball trimmed Moravian College's lead from 11 points down to just two in less than three minutes inside the final five minutes of the game. However, the visiting Greyhounds were able to hold on for the 84-80 win Thursday night inside Alumnae Hall.
 
For the second game in-a-row, Sara Smith had game-high honors with 26 points on 11-for-18 from the field. Smith fueled the Mighty Macs' 43-point second half scoring 24 points. Smith also led the Mighty Macs on the glass with seven rebounds, grabbed four steals and had three assists. Adriana Sciascia and Lindsay Cras were Immaculata's other scorers to reach double digits with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Sciascia brought down six rebounds and handed out three assists. Mackie Fitzgerald had a team-leading four assists while adding seven points, five rebounds and three steals.
 
After being tied at 10-all with 13 minutes to play in the first half, Immaculata (0-2) took its largest lead of the game (22-12) with 9:42 to play before half. Fitzgerald and Cras started the 12-2 spurt for the Mighty Macs knocking down three-pointers, and Reilly Larkin also had four points in the run.
 
Less than four minutes later, Moravian (2-1) had taken a one-point advantage, 26-25, with a 14-3 run of its own. After the Greyhounds pushed their lead to four (32-28), the Mighty Macs tied the contest for the fifth time during the opening half at 34-34 with just inside one minute to play. Taylor Freeman had a jumper for Moravian but Larkin was able to give Immaculata a one-point halftime advantage (37-36) as she hit a three with 15 seconds remaining.
 
Sciascia had a layup to begin the second-half scoring, but a 10-0 run by Moravian afterwards opened up a 46-39 lead for the Greyhounds at the 17:30 mark. The Mighty Macs were able to get within two (49-47) with 14:43 left but the Greyhounds again worked their lead back to seven.
 
Immaculata got within three points (62-59) of Moravian but a 14-5 spurt gave the Greyhounds their largest advantage of the evening, 76-64, with 5:15 remaining in the contest. Sciascia connected on a three and Smith went up for the bucket to trim the Mighty Macs deficit to seven (76-69) with 4:37 left. However, Moravian built it back to double figures by the 3:55 mark before Immaculata sparked its furious late rally.
 
Smith had seven points and Sciascia had the other four points in Immaculata's 11-2 run to get within two points (82-80) with 1:37 to play.
 
Moravian finished the game shooting 54.5 percent (36-66) from the field and was 52.9 percent (9-17) from beyond the arc. Immaculata finished 31 of 67 (.463) from the field and connected on 6 of 13 (.462) three's.
 
Immaculata hosts DeSales on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off at Alumnae Hall is 1 p.m.
