Field Hockey Comeback Falls Short In 2013 Opener

CHESTER, Pa.- The Immaculata field hockey team started the 2013 campaign with a road game at Widener on Friday evening and after falling behind 3-0 early in the second half, the Mighty Macs stormed back with a pair of goals to cut the deficit to one, but they were unable to complete the comeback in a 3-2 defeat.  Junior Natalie Rivera and sophomore Patsy Murphy notched goals for Immaculata while junior Tiffany Lockfeld provided the assist on both tallies.
 
Widener jumped out to a 2-0 lead at halftime on the strength of goals by Meghan Garvey and Samantha Balonis against first half goalie freshman Christine McIntyre, who had three saves in her collegiate debut.
 
Widener extended their lead to 3-0 in the 49th minute on Garvey's second goal, this one against freshman Sarah Pasternak who had three saves in her collegiate debut as she played the entire second half.
 
The Mighty Macs responded with their first goal of the season in the 52nd minute when Rivera deflected in a pass from Lockfeld off a corner to cut the deficit to 3-1.
 
In the 59th minute, Immaculata continued their comeback charge when Murphy scored her first collegiate goal after the initial shot was stopped.
 
The Mighty Macs continued to apply pressure in the final ten minutes of the game, but were unable to close the deficit as they dropped the opener.
 
Immaculata will look to build upon their second half momentum in their home opener on Thursday, September 5th against Goucher at 4 p.m. at Draper Walsh Stadium.
