SCRANTON, Pa. – Marywood University was able to sweep Immaculata University in softball action on Saturday afternoon by a pair of one-run games. The host Pacers won the opener, 4-3, and then took game two, 3-2. It marked the first conference loss for the Mighty Macs, who are now 12-11 overall and 9-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
In game one, both teams put one run on the scoreboard in the fourth inning to break a scoreless game. The Mighty Macs produced their run as
Melissa Ejk doubled to open the inning, and scored two hitters later when
Samantha Strickland hit a RBI single to center field. The Pacers' run in the bottom of the inning also came from a single-double combination.
The Mighty Macs scored twice more in the fifth in lead 3-1.
Jenny Barnholt and
Holly Schell strung together singles to get two runners on with one out.
Christiana Donofry then sacrificed the runners into scoring position. Ejk then came through with a two-run single into right center to bring both runners around to score.
It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth that Marywood jumped on top, 4-3, with three runs off two hits and three Immaculata errors.
Barnholt singled to lead off the seventh for Immaculata, but the Mighty Macs were able to tie the game up.
Ejk and Barnholt both had two hits in the opener.
Meagan Fitzgerald (9-5) pitched six innings giving up seven hits and four runs, only one earned, while striking out three.
In the nightcap, Immaculata and Marywood both scored single runs in the second inning. Immaculata's run came as
Allison Zborowski scored on a throwing error.
Marywood then plated another run in the bottom of the third to lead, 2-1. However, the Mighty Macs tied the game (2-2) in the fourth as Barnholt walk and later came around to score on Schell's sacrifice fly.
The Pacers came back with a single run in the fifth and it capped all the scoring.
Nicole Curcione pitched six innings allowing six hits and three runs, all unearned.
Curcione and Strickland accounted for the Mighty Macs' two hits of the second game.
Immaculata hosts Cedar Crest in a single game on Thursday at 3 p.m.
