GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Immaculata University's softball team swept its final regular-season Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) twinbill Saturday afternoon at Gwynedd-Mercy to claim the No. 2 seed in next week's CSAC Tournament. The Mighty Macs clinched the bye into the weekend's championship round with 5-4 and 7-4 victories against the Griffins.
Immaculata (22-16, 18-4 CSAC) has never entered the conference tournament seeded as high as No. 2. The Mighty Macs were seeded third in 2011, and entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed in 2009 when they finished as runner-up.
Immaculata had to play come-from-behind in the opener, and scored the winning run in the top of the seventh for the 5-4 win.
Melissa Ejk led things off with a single up the middle, and
Allison Zborowski came in to pinch run.
Samantha Strickland then put down a sacrifice bunt to advance Zborowski over to second.
Danielle Palmisano then grounded out to the third baseman, and Zborowski was able to score the winning run on a Gwynedd-Mercy throwing error as the Griffins were trying to make a play to get Zborowski at third.
Gwynedd-Mercy (18-14, 16-6) scored three runs in its half of the first inning for the lead 3-0 lead.
Immaculata got one run back in the top-half of the third as
Holly Schell walked and Ejk drove her home with a RBI double down the left field line.
The Mighty Macs made it a 3-2 game with one more run in the fifth as
Kenzie Brown singles and later scored as the Griffins made two errors in the inning.
Immaculata took the lead, 4-3, in the sixth with two runs.
Brittany Merkle singled and scored two batters later as Jessica Decastro hit a RBI single into left center. DeCastro then scored when
Christiana Donofry hit a RBI single to left field.
Gwynedd-Mercy came back with one run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 4-4.
Ejk finished game one 3-for-3 with one RBI.
Meagan Fitzgerald (14-8) got the win in the circle. She allowed six hits and four runs while striking out nine and issuing two walks.
In the nightcap, Immaculata pushed four runs across the plate in the third, and led the rest of the way. Gwynedd-Mercy cut it to 4-3 after the fifth inning, but Immaculata plating three runs in the top of the sixth to put the game away.
Ejk, Strickland and Merkle led the Mighty Macs with two hits each in game two. Ejk also scored two runs and had two RBI.
Jenny Barnholt went 1-for-3 with three RBI.
Nicole Curcione (8-8) gave up seven hits and four runs, only two earned, for Immaculata.
The Mighty Macs' four-run third inning came with just two hits and one walk, while Gwynedd-Mercy committed two errors. Ejk doubled and Merkle singled for the two hits.
Immaculata had six hits in the sixth inning to produce its three runs. Ejk had a RBI single, while Barnholt's single produced the final two runs.
Immaculata will play its first tournament game of the CSAC Championship in the first game on Friday, May 3 beginning at 10 a.m. The Mighty Macs will take on the winner of the first round game between the third and sixth seed. That first round game will be played Wednesday afternoon.
