IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University softball split its final non-conference twinbill of the season Tuesday afternoon with Swarthmore. After a 1-0 defeat in the opener, Immaculata rallied for seven runs in the nightcap to defeat Swarthmore, 7-4.
It also marked the Mighty Macs final time playing at home during the regular season. Immaculata finishes the 2013 regular season with a 13-2 record at home.
Danielle Palmisano led the hosts with three hits during the doubleheader. Five other Mighty Macs collected two hits, while
Melissa Ejk and
Brittany Merkle both had two runs driven in to go along with their two hits.
In the opener, the Garnet (19-17) scored one run in the first inning, and it proved to be the difference in the game.
The Mighty Macs scattered three hits during the game.
Kenzie Brown had two of those hits.
Meagan Fitzgerald took the loss inside the circle as she allowed eight hits and just the one run.
Immaculata (20-16) struck early in the second game, scoring one run in the first inning and five more in second to jump ahead, 6-2.
Holly Schell led off the Immaculata portion of the first with a single, and after being advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ejk, scored on
Samantha Strickland's single up the middle.
The Mighty Macs had five of their 12 hits during the game in the second inning, including three extra-base hits.
Christiana Donofry singled, and she scored on the next hit as Schell doubled down the left field line. Ejk then doubled home Schell for the second run. Strickland then walked to put two runners on base for the Mighty Macs. Merkle then had a two-RBI double down the right field line to plate both Ejk and Jessica Decastro, who had come in to run for Strickland.
Jenny Barnholt pushed the final run across the plate with her RBI single into center field scoring Merkle.
Swarthmore chipped away at the Immaculata lead with solo runs in the third and fourth. However, Immaculata closed the book with a home run that cleared the left field fence in the sixth by Ejk. It was her first collegiate homer.
Schell, Ejk, Palmisano, Merkle and Donofry all had two hits in the nightcap.
Nicole Curcione got the win as just gave up just seven hits and four runs, three earned. She also struck out five and walked two hitters.
Immaculata plays its final doubleheader of the regular season on Saturday traveling to Gwynedd-Mercy. First pitch is scheduled for noon. Immaculata, which has already clinched a spot in the Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament, will learn its seed following Saturday's action.
