Widener Takes Softball Doubleheader 8-4 and 1-0

CHESTER, Pa. – Widener University's softball team got the best of Immaculata University on Wednesday evening, sweeping the doubleheader by scores of 8-4 in the opener and 1-0 in the nightcap.
 
Immaculata (17-13) scored two runs in the first and third innings during game one to take a 4-1 lead, before Widener came to the plate in the bottom of the third.
 
Holly Schell led off the game with a single and scored unearned from second on an error for the Mighty Macs' first run. Brittany Merkle hit a RBI single to left field to score Danielle Palmisano, who had reached base on a fielder's choice.
 
Widener got one run back in the first off a lead-off home run.
 
Immaculata struck for its two runs in the third with two outs. Samantha Strickland walked and Merkle then doubled into the left-center field gap. Both runners then scored unearned on a fielding error.
 
The Pride scored two runs in the bottom half of the third, but still trailed the Mighty Macs, 4-3.
 
Widener then took the lead plating four runs in the fourth and one more run in the fifth.
 
Schell finished 2-for-4 and Merkle was 2-for-3 in the first game.
 
Meagan Fitzgerald took the loss in the circle, allowing 11 hits, six earned runs, four strikeouts and two walks.
 
Game two was a pitchers battle as the two teams combined for just six hits that produced just the one Widener run.
 
The Pride broke a scoreless game with one run in the fourth, and that was all the hosts needed.
 
Immaculata managed just two hits in the nightcap from Strickland and Caitlyn Hudock.
 
Nicole Curcione was in the circle for the Mighty Macs. She gave up four hits, one earned one and had one strikeout.
 
Immaculata returns to conference play on Friday hosting Rosemont at 3 p.m.
