Softball Captures Two Wins Against Cairn

LANGHORNE, Pa.
– Immaculata University took both ends of its softball doubleheader against Cairn University in five-inning affairs on Saturday afternoon. The visiting Mighty Macs won the opener 8-0, and exploded for an 18-1 victory against the Highlanders in game two.
 
Immaculata ups it record to 15-11 overall and 12-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC). Cairn slips to 3-20, 1-13 CSAC.
 
Meagan Fitzgerald pitched game one for the Mighty Macs giving up just two hits while striking out eight.
 
The middle of Immaculata's lineup did the greatest damage at the plate. Brittany Merkle was 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. Danielle Palmisano and Caitlyn Hudock each went 2-for-3, and Hudock had two RBI.
 
Holly Schell and Jenny Barnholt also had hits for Immaculata, and Holly drove in the Mighty Macs' other two runs.
 
Merkle hit a two-run homer to start a four-run second inning for Immaculata. Holly Schell tripled later in the inning to score two more runs.
 
Merkle again had two RBI in the third as she hit a triple to score Palmisano and Melissa Ejk, and she later scored off the bat of Hudock.
 
The Mighty Macs pushed their eighth run across in the fourth as Hudock singled to score Ejk from second.
 
Immaculata scored in all five innings during game two as the team finished with 22 hits.
 
The Mighty Macs had a five-run first, six-run second and plated two more in the third for the 13-0 lead after three innings.
 
Cairn's only run of the game came in the fourth inning to cut Immaculata's lead to 16-1.
 
Barnholt led the squad going 5-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored in the nightcap. Ejk finished 4-for-5 and scored four runs. Nicole Curcione went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs score, and she walked twice. Christiana Donofry, Palmisano, Merkle and Allison Zborowski all had two hits. Jessica DeCastro and Zborowski each drove in three Mighty Mac runs.
 
Curcione pitched all five innings for the Mighty Macs allowing four hits and striking out seven Highlanders.
 
Immaculata will play Baptist Bible on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in a make-up from its postponed Friday doubleheader.
