CLERMONT, Fla. – Immaculata University's softball squad split its action on the first day of the NTC Spring Games, winning the nightcap against Michigan-Dearborn, 5-3, after falling in its season opener to Rose-Hulman, 4-1, in the morning.
Meagan Fitzgerald got the win in the circle against Michigan-Dearborn tossing four innings and giving up just one run on five hits.
Nicole Curcione came in and pitched the final three innings to get credit for the save. Curcione allowed two runs on five hits.
Holly Schell led the Mighty Macs' bats as she went 3-for-4 with one double and one run scored.
Melissa Ejk had two hits, including a double, and scored both times while driving in one run.
Danielle Palmisano was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and
Brittany Merkle went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Michigan-Dearborn's Lindsay Colasinski suffered the loss as she surrendered five runs on 10 Immaculata hits.
In the opener, Immaculata (1-1) managed just two hits off Rose-Hulman pitcher Brianne Widmoyer as the Fightin' Engineers won, 4-1.
Schell got on base after hustling out a triple, and she later was plated by a double from Ejk to account for the Mighty Macs' run.
Curcione was tagged for the loss in game one after allowing four hits, four runs, three of the earned, during the final three innings of the game. Fitzgerald started the game and pitched three innings holding Rose-Hulman to just one hit.
The Fightin' Engineers' game-winning run came courtesy of a three-run homer from Jett Bender in the top of the sixth inning.
Immaculata is back on the field tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against Capital before playing Wilmington at 11 a.m.
