Immaculata Closes Regular Season With Victory

BOX SCORE

IMMACULATA, Pa.
- Immaculata men's basketball (12-13, 11-7 CSAC) wrapped up the regular season with a 69-61 victory over Cairn (1-24, 0-18 CSAC) and the Mighty Macs will now shift their focus to the CSAC postseason conference tournament where Immaculata has earned the fourth seed.  The Mighty Macs will host the fifth-seeded Neumann Knights on Saturday afternoon at Alumnae Hall at 3 p.m. looking to defeat them for the second time in a span of six days.

In tonight's game, Immaculata was led by senior Nelson Torres with 15 points and six rebounds, followed by junior Jerod Cain who chipped in a career-high 12 points.  Seniors T.J. Klinger and Kendall Peters each collected 10 points in the winning effort.

As a team, the Mighty Macs did a lot of their scoring at the free throw line where they went 19-for-22 (86%), including 9-for-10 in the second half.

After defeating Cairn earlier in the season, Immaculata was hoping to sweep the Highlanders and go a perfect 10-0 in school history against Cairn, but they did not make it easy.

The Mighty Macs jumped out to a 10-point halftime lead and led comfortably most of the way in the second half until Cairn cut the lead to 57-54 with 6:15 to go in the game.  Torres then knocked down two free throws and sophomore Xavier Brown (six points) hit a lay-up in the next possession to extend the lead back out to seven points at 61-54.

Down the stretch, the Highlanders didn't get closer than six points as Klinger went 4-for-4 from the line to wrap up the regular season with a victory.

In the first half, Cairn grabbed the early lead, but the Mighty Macs took a one-point 12-11 lead that they would not give up for the rest of the game.  The pivotal run of the half came when the Mighty Macs were up 19-17 and they went on a 7-0 spurt to swell the lead to nine points.  Cain, Brown, and freshman Rodney Duncan (six points) carried the offense during this stretch.

Immaculata extended the lead out to 10 points at the break and maintained their lead for the rest of the game as they look to ride the momentum of a two-game winning streak into the playoffs.

On Saturday, Immaculata hopes to make it two wins over Neumann at home in one week after defeating them 61-59 on Monday night at Alumnae Hall.  The four-five matchup will get underway at 3 p.m.

In the other quarterfinal, the third-seeded Keystone will host the sixth-seeded Centenary.

The lowest remaining seed will travel to top-seeded Cabrini on Tuesday night while the highest remaining seed will travel to second-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy.
