HACKETTSTOWN, N.J.-The Immaculata men's basketball team travelled to Centenary (2-5, 1-0 CSAC) looking to win their CSAC opener over the Cyclones, but the Mighty Macs (2-2, 0-1 CSAC) fell 68-55 in overtime to snap a two-game winning streak. Centenary outscored Immaculata 20-7 in the extra period to take control of the game and seal the conference victory.
Junior
Barry Brockington led the way scoring for Immaculata with 12 points and eight rebounds, while senior
Brandon Smith chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds.
After Centenary's Clay Roker tied the game on a driving lay-up with 13 seconds remaining, the Mighty Macs had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but sophomore
Tyreek Peeples' three-pointer from the corner rimmed out which sent the game to overtime tied 48-48.
Once overtime started, the Cyclones took control scoring the first seven points and twelve of the first fourteen to build an insurmountable lead.
Immaculata's defense was very good throughout as they held Centenary to 38.3% shooting, and led for most of the way.
In the first half, the Mighty Mac advantage was as large as nine at 16-7 after back-to-back layups by Smith early on. Immaculata maintained that lead with a layup from sophomore
Tony Calamaro (5 points) and free throws from Brockington.
A 7-0 run toward the end of the first half by Centenary trimmed the Mighty Mac lead, but they were able to build it to 32-25 at the break.
Both defenses were locked in during the second half of play as neither team could find an offensive rhythm.
Centenary tied the game at 45-45 with 3:21 to go, but Immaculata would go back in front on a jumper by freshman
Roy Ferrell Jr. (7 points) with 1:30 left.
After a Cyclone free throw, Peeples (8 points) responded with a free throw of his own before the tying bucket by Centenary that sent it to overtime.
Junior
Mamadou Diakite chipped in nine points and eight rebounds.
Immaculata will look to bounce back on Wednesday night when they host Cairn at 8 p.m. in their CSAC home opener.
NOTES: Immaculata is now 7-6 all-time against the Cyclones … Smith passed Rob Siter (2008-12) to move into third place on the all-time rebounds list in team history with 427.
