Field Hockey Falls In CSAC Semifinals, 3-1

Box Score

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa.- The third-seeded Immaculata field hockey team travelled to Gwynedd Mercy looking to upset the second-seeded Griffins (11-8) on Wednesday night in the CSAC Semifinals, and after taking an early 1-0 lead, the Mighty Macs (6-13) surrendered the next three goals and fell 3-1 to Gwynedd Mercy to end their 2013 campaign.  Sophomore Lindsay Cras scored the goal for the Mighty Macs, but it wasn't enough in the team's final game of the season.

Cras scored 18:33 into the game on an assist from freshman Brittany Robertson.  Robertson took a shot that the goalie stopped, but Cras was there to knock the ball in and give IU a 1-0 lead as they played well early.

Freshman goalie Sarah Pasternak had nine saves in the first half alone, but Stephanie Bacho for the Griffins scored with just under three minutes remaining to send the teams to the locker room tied 1-1.

In the second half, Gwynedd Mercy took a lead they would not relinquish just 2:32 into second half play.  The CSAC's leading scorer, Maria Karidas, scored her 21st goal of the season to give the Griffins a 2-1 lead.

Just a two and a half minutes later, Katie Hickson netted an insurance goal to give the Griffins a 3-1 lead with 30 minutes remaining in the game.

The Mighty Macs attempted to push up offensively with junior Ashley O'Donnell leading the charge with three shots on goal, but they were unable to break through.

Defensively, seniors Molly Byrne and Anna Gilbert (one defensive save), and freshman Sarah Pasternak (career-high tying 10 saves) kept Gwynedd Mercy at bay, but Immaculata was unable to trim the deficit as their 2013 campaign ended in the CSAC Semifinals.

The postseason trip was the fifth in the last six seasons, and as a team, they improved by five wins from 2012 to 2013.
