Mighty Macs Storm Back For First Win Of The Season, 95-93

SCRANTON, Pa.- The Immaculata men's basketball team (1-1) grabbed their first win of the season in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Radisson Invitational against Penn State-Abington (0-2) when they rallied from a 10-point deficit with 3:10 remaining to force overtime and win 95-93.  The Mighty Macs trailed by as many as 19 in the second half with 9:08 to go in the game, but they outscored the Nittany Lions 33-14 in the rest of regulation to go to overtime.
 
Senior Brandon Smith tallied his second consecutive double-double to start the season, and seventh of his career, with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Mighty Macs in both categories.  With his back-to-back double-doubles, he was named to the All-Tournament Team.
 
Trailing by 10 with just over three minutes remaining, sophomore reserve Rodney Duncan (12 points, 4 assists) knocked down three free throws to cut the deficit to seven before Smith scored on a layup to make it 83-78 with 2:36 to go.
 
After a free throw by Penn State's Mike Marvin (34 points, 15 rebounds), junior Mamadou Diakite (9 points, 9 rebounds) knocked down a pair of free throws and Smith scored on another lay-up to slice the deficit to 84-82 with 1:26 to go.  After a missed lay-up, junior Jose Ortiz (19 points) got to the foul line and hit both free throws to tie the game for the first time in the second half.  As a team for the game, Immaculata was 20-for-27 (74%) from the line and 17-for-20 in the second half.
 
Marvin then hit a jumper before Smith laid in another basket to tie it 86-86 with 35 seconds to go, which is where it would stay heading into overtime.
 
In the extra session, sophomore Tyreek Peeples (13 points) took over scoring seven of the nine points including his third and fourth three pointers of the game.  After the Nittany Lions scored the first five points of overtime, Peeples hit back-to-back threes to give the Mighty Macs a one-point lead that they would not relinquish.
 
Peeples iced the game away with a free throw as Immaculata escaped with a big comeback 95-93 win, their first of 2013-14.
 
In the first half, Immaculata held the lead after scoring the first basket, but the Nittany Lions held it the rest of the half including a 41-35 advantage at the break.
 
The Penn State-Abington lead got as large as 19 in the second half before the Mighty Macs whittled down the lead and had their late push.
 
Junior Barry Brockington (8 points, 7 rebounds) and freshman Roy Ferrell Jr. (4 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists) both had strong overall games.
 
As a team, the Mighty Macs were 11-for-23 (48%) from three-point range.
 
Immaculata will open their home schedule on Thursday when they host Penn State Berks at 7 p.m.
 
NOTES: Smith is tied for 6th on the school's list of free throws made with 152 (Julius Lopez, 2005-09) … His 410 rebounds for his career is now 4th most all-time after he passed Robert Jones (2006-08) … Peeples eclipsed the 100 point mark for his career with 13 tonight … Mike Marvin establish a new record for most points in a game for an opponent against Immaculata with 34 tonight … The Mighty Macs are now 2-0 all-time against Penn State-Abington.
