Moravian Deals Mighty Macs Non-Conference Defeat

, Pa.-The Immaculata men's basketball team (4-6) dropped their final non-conference matchup of the season on the road at Moravian (9-3) by a score of 72-63 on Monday night.  Junior Brandon Smith paced the Mighty Macs with 14 points and nine rebounds on the night while senior Nelson Torres contributed 12 points.  Sophomore newcomer Xavier Brown tallied 11 points in his Immaculata debut.
 
The Greyhounds were able to turn a 39-34 lead at the break into a 16-point lead early in the second half with a 13-2 start after halftime that proved to be the difference in the game.  The Mighty Macs were able to trim the lead to as small as five with four and a half minutes remaining, but the Greyhounds used a late run to put the game away.
 
In the first half, the teams exchanged leads 12 times in a back-and-forth affair early.  The game was also tied five times as both teams were searching for an offensive rhythm early in the game. 
 
The best Mighty Mac run of the half came when Moravian held a 17-14 lead and Immaculata responded with an 8-0 run to give them their largest lead of the game at 22-17 midway through the first half.  Brown hit a three and Smith followed with five straight points to power the run.
 
Moravian then responded with six straight points to take the lead back.  With the score tied at 24-24, the Greyhounds went on a 9-2 spurt to give them their largest lead of the game to that point.  D.J. Strayhorn (24 points) led the charge.  Moravian would carry a five-point advantage into the locker room.
 
After the break, Moravian got off to the fast start to take control of the game at 52-36 with 14 minutes remaining in the game.  Junior Jerod Cain (4 points) finally ended the Greyhound run with a jumper.  The Mighty Macs would continue to fight, trimming the lead to single digits for much of the second half.
 
With 6:34 remaining, Immaculata trailed 61-51 before they went on a 5-0 run after a three-pointer by freshman Tyreek Peeples (6 points, 3 assists) and two free throws by junior Adam Jones (6 points) to get within five at 61-56 with 4 ½ minutes to go.
 
However, Morvian then ripped off a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to put the game out of reach for the Mighty Macs as the Greyhounds finished off the 72-63 victory.
 
For the game, the Mighty Macs outrebounded Moravian 42-35, with 20 of them coming on the offensive glass.
 
Immaculata will now move into CSAC play for the remainder of the season where they are 3-0 and tied for first with Gwynedd-Mercy.  They will travel to Marywood on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
 
NOTES: Brandon Smith moved passed teammate Kendall Peters into 10th place for career field goals made with 171 total…Smith also moved into 10th all-time in free throws made with 103…Torres is now alone in 3rd place on the all-time blocked shots list with 50 after moving passed Jeff DeSantis (2006-10)…Immaculata is now 1-1 against Moravian after beating them 82-76 on November 18th, 2011.
