IMMACULATA, Pa.-With the score tied at 52-52, Immaculata (7-8, 6-2 CSAC) went on a late 11-3 run to take control of the game as they held on to beat Centenary (8-9, 5-5 CSAC) by a score of 69-63 on Saturday afternoon at Alumnae Hall. The Mighty Macs never trailed the entire second half, but three Cyclone runs were held off by Immaculata to remain perfect at home in CSAC play.
Senior
Nelson Torres led Immaculata with 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals in a balanced performance from the senior. Sophomore
Xavier Brown chipped in with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting, and senior
Todd Stokley just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine boards.
With 6:36 on the clock, Centenary had just tied the game on a layup from Andy Charles (17 points and seven rebounds) at 52-52 when the Mighty Macs went on the decisive run. During the run, junior
Adam Jones (6 points and 3 rebounds), Brown, and Torres all contributed to propel Immaculata to an 8-point advantage late in the game. Brown's lay-up with 2:07 remaining ended the run before the Cyclones came with one last push.
Over the next 57 seconds, Centenary strung together an 8-3 run to get within one possession at 66-63. However, the Mighty Macs' defense tightened and forced a missed three-pointer from Warren Murphy (20 points) with 22 seconds left to put the game away. Brown iced away the victory with a free throw and a late lay-up. The three-point defense was outstanding for the Mighty Macs all day as they held the Cyclones to 2-15 (13.3%) from beyond the arc.
Immaculata never trailed in the final twenty minutes, but the Cyclones were able to tie the game at 41-41 and 46-46. Each time, the Mighty Macs responded with a mini-run to maintain the lead.
To start the second half, Immaculata grew their lead to as large as eight out of the break. Leading 33-29, junior
Brandon Smith (6 points and 9 rebounds) along with Torres and senior
T.J. Klinger (7 points) carried the offense before a quick 6-0 run by the Cyclones cut the deficit to two points before the frantic final 10 minutes.
In the first half, Stokley and senior
Kendall Peters (4 points and 8 rebounds) played very strong to get the Mighty Macs an early lead. Stokley had eight of his 10 points in the opening 20 minutes of the game.
Leading 18-17 with 10:06 left in the first half, the Mighty Macs went on a crucial 11-2 run in four minutes to grab their only double digit advantage of the day. It appeared as if Immaculata may run away with the contest, but the Cyclones closed the first half on a 6-0 run to make it 33-29 at the break.
A key for the Mighty Macs on the day was rebounding as they bested the Cyclones 48-35 on the boards.
Immaculata will now travel to Rosemont on Monday evening at 8 p.m. looking for the season sweep of their CSAC opponent.
