SCRANTON, Pa. – Marywood University scored six points during the final 53 seconds of the contest to defeat Immaculata University, 56-50, in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
The Mighty Macs (6-9, 4-2 CSAC) led by four (50-46) with 2:56 remaining in the game, after
Sara Smith hit a jumper. The Pacers got within three on a made free throw, and Marywood's Danielle Terranella put in a layup with 1:49 remaining to cut Immaculata's edge to just one.
Terranella then made the first of two foul shots with 1:26 remaining to tie the game at 50-all. Brittany Mang handed the Pacers their first lead since the 11:27 mark of the second half when she made a layup with just 53 seconds remaining in regulation. Marywood (8-6, 5-1) was able to seal the win with a 4-for-4 performance from Mang and Terranella at the foul line during the final 24 ticks.
Immaculata's effort was led by 14 points and five steals from
Adriana Sciascia. Smith and
Mackie Fitzgerald each chipped in eight points.
Jackie Deegler was the Mighty Macs' leader on the boards with 10 rebounds, while
Katie Durkin brought down six rebounds.
Chrissy Esbensen dished out a team-high four assists.
Immaculata led by as many as eight points during the first half, the last coming with 8:17 left in the half (19-11) as
Brittany Merkle had a layup. The Mighty Macs held a 23-21 advantage at halftime.
Marywood ran out to a nine-point lead (35-26) during the first eight minutes of the second half after outscoring Immaculata, 14-3, to begin the stanza. The Pacers saw their lead quickly disappear as the Mighty Macs went on a 12-0 charge to retake a 38-35 lead, as Sciascia scored eight points, including two three's, during the two-minute span.
Mang scored a game-high 17 points for Marywood, and Terranella finished with nine points and a team-best eight rebounds.
Immaculata continues conference play on Monday, Jan. 14, hosting Gwynedd-Mercy College at 7 p.m. at Alumnae Hall.
