Immaculata Women Edged at Gwynedd-Mercy, 72-66

GWYNEDD-VALLEY, Pa.- Immaculata University's women's basketball team came up short on Saturday afternoon falling to Gwynedd-Mercy, 72-66, in Colonial States Athletic Conference action.

Kelly Brown and Bridget Welz paced Immaculata with 18 points apiece while Brown totaled seven boards and four assists and Welz pulled down five rebounds. Leah Kuczynski totaled 15 points and Chrissy Esbensen dished out six assists.

Immaculata (10-11, 8-4 CSAC) opened the scoring on a jumper from Welz but the Griffins responded with a 10-2 run to take the lead five minutes into the contest. The Mighty Macs rallied and cut the deficit to one on a layup by Sara Smith, 17-16, at the 8:17 minute mark and would eventually take over the lead on a layup from Kuczynski followed by a made free-throw with five minutes to play.

Both teams traded buckets in the final minutes of the first half but a layup from Gwynedd-Mercy with two seconds remaining sent the Griffins into halftime with a 38-33 lead.

Immaculata came out in the second half and scored the first four points to cut its deficit to one, 38-37.  Gwynedd-Mercy's Brittany Neil nailed a three-pointer at the 15 minute mark that sparked an 8-2 run as the Griffins took the largest lead of the game, 59-45.
The Mighty Macs rallied on an explosive 16-5 run followed by a three-pointer by Katie Durkin to trail by two points, 66-64, with five minutes to play. The Griffins did not allow Immaculata any closer as they closed out the game scoring six points to seal the victory.

Taylour Alston led Gwynedd-Mercy with 15 points and 11 rebounds while Brittany Neil and Jess Rotella netted 12 points each.

Immaculata is back in action Tuesday night at Philadelphia Biblical University for a 6 p.m. contest.
