HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Immaculata University's men's basketball team extended its winning streak to four games as the Mighty Macs defeated the Centenary College Cyclones, 69-59, in the regular-season finale on Wednesday night.
The win clinched a playoff spot for the Mighty Macs, who improved to 10-15 overall and 8-10 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Centenary finishes its season 12-13, 8-10 in the conference.
Nelson Torres paced Immaculata with a double-double of 25 points and 12 rebounds while addingfour assists and three steals.
Rob Siter added 12 points and six rebounds, while
Brandon Smith finished with 10 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots. Stokley just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds while leading the squad with five assists.
Immaculata used a crucial 14-0 run midway through the second half to fuel the Mighty Macs to the victory. Centenary took the lead 47-46 on a Gabe Cheavers layup at the 11:44 mark. In just over five minutes though, Immaculata had run its advantage back to 13 (60-47) with 6:13 left in the contest. Torres scored nine points during the spurt to lead the run. The Cyclones were not able to get any closer than six the rest of the way.
The first 20 minutes of play saw six lead changes before Immaculata used an 11-2 run during 3:07 to lead 36-24 with 3:29 left before halftime.
Warren Murphy poured in 22 points, eight rebounds and four assists for Centenary. Larry Lenahan finished with 11 rebounds and nine points before fouling out.
Immaculata heads to No. 3 seed Gwynedd-Mercy College on Saturday, Feb. 18 for a quarterfinal matchup in the CSAC Tournament. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. No. 4 seed Rosemont hosts No. 5 seed Neumann in the other quarterfinal game.
