Mighty Macs Hang On for CSAC Victory

BOX SCORE

IMMACULATA, Pa. –
Immaculata men's basketball (2-4, 1-0) raced out to a ten-point halftime lead and held on throughout the second half as Rosemont (4-1, 0-1) tried to come back, but the Mighty Macs were able to hold on for the 64-60 CSAC win at Alumnae Hall.  Senior Nelson Torres was the high-scorer for the Mighty Macs with 18 points and 9 rebounds and freshman Tyreek Peeples contributed a career-high 13 of his own.  For the second consecutive game, Immaculata never trailed and used free throws to keep the opponent at bay late.

For Rosemont, 20 points a piece from Derrick Carter and DeAndre Jordan were not enough to put the Ravens in front.

The teams traded buckets early with Immaculata never leading by more than four, but with the game tied at 14-14 midway through the first half, Immaculata ripped off a quick 7-0 spurt to jump in front.  A three by Peeples followed by an Adam Jones jumper (12 points, 4 rebounds) and a Todd Stokley (5 points) layup gave the Mighty Macs a comfortable first half advantage.

A breakaway lay-up by junior Jerod Cain with less than a minute to go put Immaculata up 31-21 at the break.  Jones led the team in the first half with eight points.

A jumper early in the second half by freshman Lou Dominique (6 points, 4 rebounds) gave the Mighty Macs their biggest lead of the game at 12 points.

The Ravens started to creep back into the game on the strength of Carter and Jordan, but that's when Torres took over offensively for the Mighty Macs to keep Rosemont at arms' length.  He ripped off eight straight points at one point as Immaculata continued to lead by seven.  A powerful running dunk with just over nine minutes left in the game by Torres made it 45-37, but the Ravens would not go quietly.

With 3:24 remaining, Jordan hit a jumper that cut the lead to just two points at 49-47 and thirty seconds later the game remained close at 51-49.  That's when Peeples took over and scored seven straight points himself, with four coming from the free throw line and after a good foul shot by Torres, the Mighty Macs had a comfortable 59-50 lead with 52 seconds left.

A couple Ravens' baskets cut the lead to as few as three, but a free throw by Cain with less than two seconds to go put the game away as Immaculata left winners by a score of 64-60.

For the game, the Mighty Macs were outstanding from the floor shooting 22-43 (51.2%).

Next, Immaculata travels to NCAA Tournament runner-up Cabrini on Wednesday evening at 8 p.m.
