Immaculata Grabs First Win of the Season

The Immaculata men's basketball team (1-4) never trailed from the opening tip in their first victory of the season over Penn State-Berks (0-5) by a score of 76-72.  Senior Nelson Torres had a great night scoring with a season-high 25 points, 17 of which came from the free throw line.  Junior Brandon Smith added his fourth career double-double with a season-high 21 points and 11 rebounds to help maintain the Mighty Mac lead throughout the contest.  As a team, Immaculata hit 28 of 40 free throws (70%) in the win.
 
In the opening minute, Smith got his first bucket of the game on a layup to give the Mighty Macs an early lead in a contest they would never trail.  The Immaculata lead got as big as seven points in the first half on a free throw by senior Todd Stokley (2 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists).  Immaculata led Penn State-Berks 34-28 at the break after shooting 50% (11-22) from the field in the first twenty minutes.
 
In the second half, the Nittany Lions fought back to tie the game at 56-56 with just under nine minutes left in the game on a lay-up by Darren Major (team-high 20 points).  From there, the Mighty Macs ripped off a 10-2 run in the next three minutes to take an 8-point lead on the strength of four points apiece from Smith and Torres.
 
The Mighty Macs continued to keep the Nittany Lions at arms' length on the strength of free throws until 47 seconds left in the game when Major hit another lay-up to make it a 71-70 game.  From there, Torres hit five free throws down the stretch to put the game away and seal the first victory of the season for Immaculata.
 
Junior Adam Jones had his second consecutive double digit scoring game with 10 points along with six rebounds and a team-high four steals.
 
Smith was very efficient from the floor, shooting 9-14 and 3-3 from the line.
 
NOTES: The double-double is Smith's second of the season…Last game, Smith moved into 8th place in Immaculata history in free throw attempts with his eight attempts the other night.  He now has 172 career free throw attempts…With his five rebounds tonight, Stokley is now in 8th in Immaculata history in rebounds with 258.  He passed Dan Lepone…Torres moved into 3rd place all-time in rebounds with 408, which moved him ahead of Rob Jones.
