BOX SCORE
READING, Pa.-The Mighty Mac men's basketball team (0-2) dropped their second straight contest in the consolation game of the Wyndham Reading Tip-Off Tournament to Elms College (1-1) by a score of 70-57. Senior
Nelson Torres followed up his strong debut with a team-high 16 points and 6 rebounds while junior
Brandon Smith notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
Elms raced out to a 9-point halftime lead and the Mighty Macs never got closer than six points in the second half as Elms kept Immaculata at arms-length to seal the non-conference victory. For the second consecutive game, Immaculata struggled from the free throw line. After a 6-for-13 outing in the season opening defeat to Albright, the Mighty Macs were able to get to the charity stripe 38 times, but only knocked down 15 of those attempts.
The teams traded early buckets and a Torres layup four minutes into game gave the Mighty Macs a 9-7 lead, but that would be their final lead of the contest. A 15-1 Elms' spurt keyed by leading scorer Andre French (19 points) over a 6-minute stretch in the first half gave them a 22-12 lead with 8 minutes remaining in the first half.
However, the Mighty Macs battled back with an 8-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 22-20 with 3:28 to go in the first half, but Elms refused to let Immaculata get any closer as they extended their lead back to 9 points at 32-23 at the break.
Immaculata was unable to cut significantly into the deficit until 12:24 left in the game when junior
Adam Jones (9 points, 6 rebounds) hit a lay up to make it 47-41 Elms, but as they had all game, Elms responded with a run to get their lead back to double digits for good with just over 10 minutes left. The lead got as high as 17 with 5:53 left at 66-49 as Immaculata suffered their second straight loss.
T.J. Klinger was the fourth highest scorer for the Mighty Macs with 8 points, 5 rebounds, and a team-high 3 assists and 3 steals. Immaculata actually outshot Elms at 39% to 31%, but were only able to knock down two threes to go along with 15 turnovers.
The Mighty Macs hope to get in the win column for the first time this season against Hood on the road this Tuesday at 7 p.m.
NOTES: Immaculata last lost their first two games in 2010-11 when they lost their first three on their way to a 10-16 season.
