Torres Lifts Mighty Macs To 84-83 Win Against Penn State Abington

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Immaculata University men's basketball team won the consolation game of the Louis Fleming Basinger Memorial Tournament hosted by Lycoming College on Tuesday afternoon by defeating Penn State Abington, 84-83.
 
Nelson Torres, who led the squad in points and rebounding for the second-straight game, was named to the all-tournament team after nailing the game-winning shot against the Nittany Lions.
 
Torres paced Immaculata (4-8) with a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds while making five assists. Rob Siter finished with 21 points. Todd Stokley recorded 11 points and three blocks while T.J. Klinger chipped in 10 points and six assists. Kendall Peters had seven rebounds to go along with eight points and two blocks.
 
Immaculata shot 59.4 percent (19-32) from the field and outscored Penn State Abington, 43-36, during the second half as it overcame a six-point halftime deficit for the victory.
 
The Mighty Macs started the second half on a 9-3 run just over the first two minutes to knot the score at 50-all. Immaculata took its first lead of the contest, 54-53, as Stokley made a layup with 16:08 left in the game. Immaculata led by as many as three points before Penn State Abington tied the score for the third time in the contest at 64-64 with 10:34 to play.
 
The Nittany Lions then retook the lead, and would hold the advantage until the closing seconds of the contest. Penn State Abington went up by six, 81-75, with 4:10 left in the game when Torres and Mark Davenport both had layups to get the Mighty Macs within two (81-79) with three minutes left. Mike Marvin made both of his free throw attempts for Penn State Abington with 2:38 left to put the Nittany Lions back ahead by four, 83-79.
 
Siter then converted on a three-point play after he was fouled going in for a layup, and Immaculata was down by just one, 83-82, with 1:42 remaining. Penn State Abington turned the ball over on its next possession, and the Mighty Macs were able to use the offensive glass to keep possession. After an Immaculata timeout with 37 seconds left, Torres had the game-winning layup with 20 seconds remaining, and Penn State Abington was not able to answer.
 
Penn State Abington (3-8) scored the first seven points of the game before Immaculata got on the scoreboard at the 17:21 mark. The Nittany Lions led throughout the first half, and led by as many as 13 points with 11:15 (26-13) and 9:45 (29-16) remaining in the opening stanza. The Mighty Macs used a 16-7 run over 5:39 to cut the Nittany Lions' lead to just four, 36-32, with 4:06 to play in the half. Penn State Abington eventually took a six-point edge into intermission, 47-41, despite Torres having eight points for Immaculata during the final 2:29 of the half.
 
Marvin had game-highs in both scoring and rebounding for Penn State Abington with 28 points and 11 rebounds. Will Alton had 19 points and Mike Colacci added 18 points all on three's for the Nittany Lions. Penn State Abington finished the contest 9 of 20 (45%) from three-point range.
 
Immaculata returns to Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon hosting Cabrini College at Alumnae Hall at 3 p.m.
