Immaculata Women Come Up Short Against Gwynedd-Mercy, 60-58.

Bridget Welz led three Immaculata players in double figures with 16 points but it was not enough as visiting Gwynedd-Mercy defeated host Immaculata, 60-58, in a CSAC women's basketball game inside Alumnae Hall Monday evening.

Immaculata falls 7-8 overall and 5-2 in the CSAC while Gwynedd-Mercy improves to 10-6 overall and 6-1 in league play.

The two teams traded buckets over the beginning of the first half before Gwynedd-Mercy took a 15-7 run after a Katie Durkin three-pointer with 14:06 left to play. Immaculata  got back-to-back buckets from Kelly Brown to cut the lead, 29-26, with 2:27 left on the clock, but the Griffins responded by scoring the final two points of the stanza to hold the lead, 32-28, at the break.

Immaculata gained the lead five minutes into the second half on a pair of free throws by Leah Kuczynski and the Mighty Macs would forge a tie with 11:16 remaining on another Katie Durkin three-pointer as the hosts went on a decisive 13-7 run in the final six minutes of play to hold 55-51 advantage.

Gwynedd's Jess Rotella's three-point play knotted the score 56-all which were followed by a pair of free throws that put the Griffins ahead by three points. Welz's layup with 54 seconds left cut the Griffin's lead to one point, 58-59. However, Rotella connected on one of her free throws with 16 seconds remaining to steal the win.

Kelly Brown finished with 14 points and eight rebounds while Chrissy Esbensen totaled 10 points, four steals, and five assists. Leah Kuczynski pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds and was one point shy of a double-double netting nine points.

Natasha Matthews led the Griffins with 15 points and 14 rebounds while Jess Rotella totaled 13 points and a team-high four steals. Shea Wassel netted 11 points and nine rebounds in the win.

Immaculata hosts Keystone on Wednesday, Jan. 18 in a CSAC contest beginning at 6 p.m.
