IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University placed five scorers in double figures but it was not enough to overcome visiting Gwynedd-Mercy College on Monday night, 80-71, in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball action.
T.J. Klinger led the Mighty Macs (5-11, 3-6 CSAC) with 18 points, including 4 of 8 from three-point range, and three assists.
Brandon Smith registered a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Todd Stokley finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds.
Kendall Peters added 11 points and four assists, and
Nelson Torres had 10 points off the bench.
Immaculata trailed Gwynedd-Mercy (10-5, 5-3 CSAC) at halftime, 38-28, but the Mighty Macs were able to keep the game interesting until the finish as they outscored the Griffins, 43-42, during the final 20 minutes.
Immaculata had led by as many as nine (15-6) during the early part of the first half, but Gwynedd-Mercy put together a 13-2 run during a five-minute stretch to take a 19-17 edge with 9:18 left in the first half. The Griffins' 10-point lead at intermission was the largest advantage by either team during the opening stanza.
Immaculata chipped away at Gwynedd-Mercy's lead, eventually getting it to three (50-47) at the 9:23 mark of the second half. The Griffins then used an 11-1 run to push their edge to 13 (61-48) with 6:11 remaining in the contest.
The Mighty Macs weren't done though, as they used a 9-2 spurt during 21 seconds to get back within three (74-71) with 25 seconds left in the game. Unfortunately, Gwynedd-Mercy went 6 of 6 at the free throw line during the final 25 seconds to seal the win.
Dan DelConte led all scorers with 28 points for Gwynedd-Mercy.
Immaculata is back in action on Wednesday at 8 p.m. hosting Keystone College.
