Softball Swept by Alvernia

IMMACULATA, Pa.- Immaculata University dropped both ends of its softball doubleheader against Alvernia University, 8-5 and 7-6, on Wednesday afternoon.

Immaculata (0-4) scored three unearned runs in the first to tie the game 3-3. Sara Holleran doubled to left field that brought Mindy Monastra, Danielle Palmisano, and Holly Schell around to score.

Immaculata starter Megan Fitzgerald (0-2) pitched all seven innings. She allowed seven earned runs on 8 hits, struck out three and walked one.

Holly Schell homered to left field to earn Immaculata's last run of the game in the fourth to tie the game 5-5. The Crusaders added two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to earn the 8-5 victory.

Deanna Dungee (2-0) went the distance in the circle for Alvernia giving up four hits and striking out six. 

In the nightcap, the game was called after completing five innings. Immaculata came out strong scoring two runs in the first. Alvernia answered with one of its three homeruns in the second inning and RBI-single that gave the Crusaders the 3-2 lead.

Julia Lamplugh hit a grand slam in the bottom of the third inning off a single and two walks for the 6-3 lead. Alvernia's Samantha Penk scored another homerun scoring two in the fourth to cut the lead.  Alvernia would then knock in two runs in the fifth to win the game, 7-6. 

Danielle Palmisano started out on the mound for the Mighty Macs going 3.1 innings. She allowed five earned runs on 10 hits. Nikki Curcione (0-1) came in relief and allowed two earned on four hits during 1.2 innings of work. 

Immaculata travels to Penn State Abington tomorrow evening. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
